Barry (boprawira) | 1212 comments @ Delitealex : Ketty Jay on mid-June, let's say? I'll ask at the Buddy Read Invite, because I remember Manju was also interested.

@ Yanique & Delitealex : Leviathan Wake probably not until later in the year? But, if you want to start, please go ahead. I'm hesitant to set up something so far in advance lol.

I am! :D but I will join you guys in the second book as I have already read first book.

message 353: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments I also want to read Leviathan Wakes. I doubt I can stay with a series schedule though. I tend to binge read, so I might fly right through it.

I'd be happy to do the whole series one a month, Barry.

This is literally me.

message 358: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I'm terrible. This morning I got into work 2 hours early and I watched The mentalist on my Ipad instead of reading... I really fancied the book I had with my too but I could't be bothered to hold it! I'm super lazy sometimes.

message 359: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments Hey, no judgement here. I've also not been getting in much reading tbh. The Japanese work schedule is wearing on me again... Leave at 6am and get back at 8, so lately it's all I can do to cook dinner before falling asleep. I think I might switch to morning reading instead of at night.

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8703 comments Just out of interest, what do you do for work in Japan, Melissa? I have a friend who teaches English in Nagoya. :) He often complains about the work/life balance.

Mel | 2360 comments Siobhan wrote: "Just out of interest, what do you do for work in Japan, Melissa? I have a friend who teaches English in Nagoya. :) He often complains about the work/life balance."

I teach English as well. Unfortunately the more seniority you have the worse it gets I feel. School is 6 days a week here, and teachers are responsible for shoveling snow in the morning, club activities in the evening, and cleaning at night. That's besides the usual lesson planning, material prepping, newsletters, etc...

The thing that has been getting me this week though is being tested on memorizing the new curriculum. I think once that is done I'll feel less harried. I may have to treat myself to a reading day and hot springs on Sunday. :)

I hope your friend enjoys teaching in Nagoya. Tell him to go out for a soak in the onsen. It's the best.

That's ok, feel free to be all lazy and not read at all! 😜

Wow that's a lot of work! He says he's expected to go out for drinks with his colleagues nearly every night too, and all they do is talk about work! 😭

He's been teaching there a few years now, but has just come back to the UK for a year to do his Masters degree before moving back out. He does love it really!

I hope memorising the curriculum goes OK. You definitely deserve a relaxing treat day! ❤️

Right there with you! I had a lot of free time over the weekend, but instead of reading I watched maybe 8 episodes of Supernatural. Audio books aren't even helping with the lazy factor it seems. Oh well, the bus journeys are productive at least!

AGREED!
I sometimes talk in Supernatural quotes, but people don't get I'm quoting so I just end up sounding weird... :'(

with ~280 episodes, that's a lot of quotes... I've watched the first 8 seasons or so... but that was back when there were only 9 seasons, I think...

I love how every finale does the whole AC/DC montage... and Jared/Jensen/Misha are great at events...

Love seeing Mark Sheppard pop up in something... Supernatural... Battlestar Galactica... Doctor Who... etc

message 372: by Seán (new)

Seán | 602 comments Whoo, lots of Supernatural fans! I'm just starting Season 9 after taking a loooong break from the series. Mark Sheppard is definitely my favourite part of the show, I love that he was kept around.

Barry, do you want to set up the full series for A Shadow in Summer (Long Price Quartet). I'm happy to do one a month from June. :)

Just don't follow Petrik's update if you wanna keep your TBR list manageable lol.

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I've just finished 1 of the 4 books I've been reading this week! I hope I can finish the other 3 this weekend since I've supposed to start another today!

message 388: by Sha (new)

Sha | 1522 comments A couple of questions;

Is the addition of partially finished/abandoned books the same as it was last year? ie; count only the pages read?

If so, can I use a similar type of calculation to add in anthologies where I dropped one of the novellas and read all the rest?

What about skipped sex scenes? Because I like romance, but I'm indifferent to sex so I tend to do that sometimes.

message 389: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I don't think you can count any of the books finished this year if you started it last year. I've finished a few books in Jan that I started in Dec but I didn't add them to the challenge.

I'd say if you skipped part of a book just add in the pages you read.

message 390: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35482 comments Mod
I tend to include pages if I skim sex scenes... it's not many pages, unless it's erotica, and if you're reading erotica, why bother if you're going to skip the sex scenes?...

With an anthology tho, yea, I'd subtract the pages for any stories I skipped...

I think it's the same as last year for DNFs.

And I personally wouldn't worry about skimming a few pages out of a book! Just count it as normal.

message 393: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments Just finished my second book of the day! That's the good thing about reading multiple books together, I tend to finish them around the same time.
