House of Chains the team not the BR, Year 2!

10/10 would recommend! 😅 <3

Hi all! I'm 34, from Zagreb, Croatia. I work in the IT support. Hobbies include reading, gaming and movies. I'm also into calisthenics.
I enjoy reading fantasy, sci-fi and thrillers. Favorite series are Malazan, LOTR, Riyria, The First Law, Bloodsounder's Arc, The Faithful and the Fallen and Gentleman Bastard.
Looking forward to reading with you all.
I’m just so glad the donkey conversation is in multiple threads! I just was talking about my special buddy Patrick in my teams thread!

I'm 32 years old and my husband and I live in Oregon. He's a transplant from the east coast and I've lived here my whole life. Land of pine trees, coffee, mountains, and legal weed. We have two dogs (irishwolfhound/mastiff and a Lab/Shepard mutt), and a cat.
I work a 9-5 as a copywriter at an Outdoor store. (I write descriptions for the website that tell you why you want buy stuff. This jacket is 100% waterproof! Yay! )
The majority of what I read is fantasy, horror, and sci-fi with the random memoir, romance, or history book thrown in to mix things up.

GAH! They're so cute! Love the donkeys!
Funny story (funny-ish)...
So once I was driving down the coast and stopped to buy some roasted corn and sugar cane from a lady by the side of the road (Yay island life!!!). I was sitting in my car, minding my own business, and boom a donkey that I did not know, or see before just stuck its head in through the window! scared me half to death!
Whenever I see a donkey, I remember this.

I'm always willing to share photos of the critters! Here's some doggo photos! (just links to imgur, I don't know how to put them into the comment like the donkeys were)
Here's Henry, he's the Shepard/Lab/Super Mutt (his DNA test came back with a list of like 8 different ones, but mostly lab/Shepard)

Angus, English Mastiff/Irish Wolfhound (he was a breeder mishap, so we know for sure what he is lol, and he's the runt, so he's only around 75 lbs instead of 100 +)

And lastly Corona, the cat :)

I always thought Frosty was an alpaca or llama lol, but I guess donkey would make more sense considering where you live. Cute donkeys.

You aren't mistaking, they exist as well :) He's called Merlin, and Siobhan tried to upload a picture of him yesterday but stupid goodreads doesn't want to show it...

They are lovely, all of them :)
I love to see all those animal pictures!

Are you sure Merlin isn't just a myth? Ha!
Anyway, good to know my memory wasn't playing tricks on me.

So I'm 30, from Ireland and live with my wife and our almost-two-year-old :o My reading definitely took a hit in the past while adjusting to being a parent, but I think we've got things under control so hopefully it'll pick up this year!
I'm dipping my toes into audio-books as well so hopefully that will help me get through the ever-growing tbr list.

I went too hard on BRs at the beginning of this year and nope. 2019 I'm limiting myself to planning 3 a month.

4 was my limit but im an idiot. I basically did the same this year, signed up for far too much, freaked myself out, dropped almost everything for about 4 months and then did a crazy amount in the last few months. i need to learn moderation.

Good to know, that I'm not the only idiot :D It aren't that many for me, but still far too many...
I just can't plan ahead like that. Every month I set up a tentative TBR, but I mostly choose books based on what I'm in the immediate mood for. People here are planning reads 6 months in advance and It's just too much for me. So 3 a month I think I can manage.

My mini-bio, hmmmm. I'm married and my husband and I have four children, two boys and two girls. I've been a social worker for the past 20 years. The first ten years were spent working in the mental health field and the last ten in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. I read mostly in the genres of fantasy/science fiction and mystery (contemporary and historical), with some plain ol' historical fiction thrown in here and there.
Siobhan, those donkeys are TOO cute! There's a house on some acreage near my kids' old intermediate school and there are quite a few donkeys milling around there. Is there such a thing as miniature donkeys because they look really, really small and they never seem to grow.

They are gorgeous!! 😍
Corona (great name) looks just like my Nanna's cat Ben!

Haha your memory has not failed you! Merlin and Sunrise are the alpacas. They sadly had to go onto a new home after my mam broke her arm. It's a whole crappy story. But I still love them and their cute little faces!

Aw man, I think normal sized donkeys are super cute, so miniature ones must be insanely adorable! XD

Oh I'm sorry, I hope your mother is feeling better! And I'm sure you found them a new home, that's as nice as yours!

They have more alpaca friends now. They seem happy. :) My dad really misses them though!

Good luck Charlie. Just pick the ones you're most interested and don't stress out if you drop the rest.
I've learned not to stalk the Buddy Read Invite thread too regularly. That way I don't get the temptation to join too many BRs haha.

Different people different preference I guess. For me there are three major benefits for planning ahead. One is I have more commitment to complete my incomplete series. Second is I can plan my book purchase. Also it keeps me motivated, because I'll get excited for the next book(s) that I'm going to read.
But, I agree you should leave some flexibility or free days so that you can pick up some random book that you fancy at that time. So that reading doesn't become a chore.
I also try to limit myself to 3-4 BRs per month. So that I have some flexibility in reading 1-2 books for personal reads that I fancy.

Welcome to team Chains! Maybe we'll do a SF BR. Yanique was asking about doing the Ancillary Justice series as she's a SF fan.

I've been much better about balancing out my BRs. I also didn't schedule anything except already in progress series so I'd have the time to do stuff with all the members.

The first one was amazing and I would happily do a re-read! The second one really didn't click with me, but I feel like I should give it another shot at some point.
If I can get a Blindsight read started before the end of next year I'll be very happy :)

Welcome to the Chain Gang. Did you end up reading book 2 of Renegades? I liked it more than the first.

The house we lived in before the one we are in now the people up the road owned two horses. One regular size and one mini. The mini's breed was used in mines because of how short they are and because they're so powerful they can pull something like 10X their weight.
One night the dogs are flipping out looking at something through the glass french doors leading to the backyard and I just see these eyes and I'm like WTF is that. Way too big for a dog, wolf, etc. So I grab a flashlight and my wife is saying your crazy you have no idea what it is. The horse's name was Midnight which fits because that's about the time and it was black as black can be. I didn't know it was her and that she had escaped her pen. I have to admit the heart rate was racing a little bit.
I tried to lead it home but she didn't have on a harness and was stubborn as hell. My wife finally had to go ring their doorbell which wasn't easy because they're house is up in the woods while I hung out with her. The older girls were probably 4 and 6 at the time and they overheard and came down. They still talk about the night Midnight showed up. One of those great childhood memories that you could never plan.

Is it just the 2.5 books or is he continuing the series?

Not sure if he plans on continuing, but Blindsight works damn well as a standalone!

I'm really a huge mood reader too which is why scheduling all these BRs probably isn't a great idea for me since I love staring at the shelves and picking what ever I fancy. That being said, I've found some absolute gems this year that I wouldn't have picked up on my own so I find BRs are great for that.

@ Sean : i really liked Blindsight. Pretty awesome story and characters. Definitely recommended if you’re into hard sf.

Totally get it. I'm going to try to stick to 1-2 scheduled reads per month this year although I may join more on a whim.
