ABANDONED. Book about a Mist/Veil land where people go when they are banished

I read this book several years ago (maybe 3?). It was a middle-grade or young-adult novel, and I'm fairly sure the genre was fantasy. I vaguely remeber there being a kingdom in the book, and there were princesses maybe? One girl, I think she might've been one of the princesses, got sent to this place because she was banished from the kingdom. It was really nasty and there was black slimey stuff everywhere. The girl continued exploring and then she discovered a Mist or Veil. Behind it there was a beautiful place that all of the banished people helped to build. I don't remember anything else. Sorry, it's very vague!
