Dear LoP:
Thanks for wanting to know all this stuff. :) It's easy to forget the answers to questions like this. After interviews I always feel like I've dusted off some notes and ideas stored in my head.
Thanks!
1. What books have most influenced your life?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. They scared the sh*t out of me and I loved it. The art alone was fascinating. I think those books let me know it was ok to be a little weird, people will like it.
2. How do you develop your plots and characters?
For the most part it all just kind of falls into place. I rarely plot anything and I don't think I've ever written an outline. I have the story in my head, I know where I need to end up, and I fill in the blanks. Sometimes characters develop differently than I anticipated as the story unfolds. I love when that happens.
3. Tell us about your Lovers of Paranormal book?
The Scene is really a tale about a girl. The story is great and fun, but the meat of it all is Dylan Hart. If you took her out of the equation the story would be another tale about some vampire people. Dylan optimizes the 'other' column of the female persuasion. The one no one writes about because she's not mainstream. She's fat, snarky, broken, flawed, and otherwise not a 'ten'. Her friends are like friends everyone has. They love her, they lie to her, they kill and even die for her. A heroine is nothing without her world to save. Removing the true to form vampire and focusing on a quite real community of sanguinary lifestylers, this isn't a typical bite' em vampire novel. While Dylan is the meat, the story is the wine.
4. We all need a hero! Tell us about your protagonist(s)? Was there a real-life inspiration behind him or her?
Dylan was created out of a need to be represented. When the story first went pen to paper I knew I wanted to write about a girl like me. Like someone I would want to have a beer with. I wanted a girl everyone could relate to. Dylan is inspired by every girl out there with beer in their fridge, more jeans than dresses, a serious addiction to red velvet cake, and zero social filter.
5. A good villain is hard to write. How did you get in touch with your inner villain? Was there a real-life inspiration for him/her/it?
Honestly, I had no idea who the villain was until the third to last chapter so the character was already established 'as-is'. It made sense the moment I wrote it. There couldn't be anyone else. So, in reality, I guess I have a continuous link to my inner villain.
6. What real-life inspirations did you draw from for the world building within your book?
Pretty much everything. Something someone says in line at the grocery story, or the name of the desk clerk, it really could be anything.
7. What real-life science, pseudo-science, history, religion, or mythologies did you research for the paranormal aspect of your book?
I actually researched Hollywood, scoured maps, down to the last detail if it exists in Hollywood or Fresno it's in the book. I also read non-fiction books about vampire lore and sanguinaries. I really wanted The Scene to be reality touched with fiction.
8. What was the hardest part of writing this book?
This was my first book so I have to say...everything. Every single part.
9. What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I loved writing a specific dream Dylan has. It's really graphic and most like me.
10. Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?
I learned I cannot write a word without the right music and spearmint gum is my best friend.
11. Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers will grasp?
Nothing is ever what it seems. There always something deeper and dark under the surface. Question everything. And really, don't take everything so seriously.
12. What are your future project(s)?
As of August 17th the second in my Lynnie Russell novella series, Existence, is available! Next on the docket and the file in my WIP folder is Forsaken, Dylan Hart book four. After the ending of the third book writing this series has become intense. I'm very excited to get down and dirty with it.
Existence
13. If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?
When I was in high school I wanted nothing more than to create blood and gore in the movie industry. I even scoped out Tom Savini school of make-up. No go, obviously. So, if I had my choice, that's where I'd be. An effects make-up artist.
14. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to the Lovers of Paranormal community members?
Thank you for rocking an industry that doesn't always come out on top. With so many other choices out there, book readers are few and far between. Thanks.
