Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Anyone still looking for a pirate read could check out Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt. It's a little different - the pirate is a 'river pirate' so it's not set on the high seas (with the smelly men, peg legs, parrots etc LOL).

It wasn't my fav book of the series (again, I'm not a pirate fan), but it is a popular book I know many have loved. 4.10 GR rating. Can be read as a standalone.

Good rec, Jan. It is not my favorite either but the pirate is an interesting character.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1242 comments I have got Capture my Heart by Bobbie Smith, for my Pirate read.

Jan, I think I will take you up on the recommendation and read Scandalous Desires. The Maiden Lane series is so long, I never read them all. I read a few out of order, enjoying some and detesting others; but this one looks interesting.

Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Hope you enjoy, Mariana. It's a bit different from what you'd usually expect of a pirate read.

I finished reading the book and not sure if we can still count it under 'Pirate'! I am considering Daisy, the sidekick as one of the MCs :)

Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Ha ha. Perhaps you could refer to the book with the 'eponymous pirate', Priya. Sounds good!

Darbella, don't get me started on books where the cover doesn't represent the book. LOL. A pet peeve of mine.

Two! He must be compensating for his days at sea:)

message 265: by Mariana (new)

Mariana | 2692 comments Priya, he is a river pirate so no long months at sea to compensate for.

Darbella, I agree that he does grow in character a lot throughout the story. He also went through abuse in his childhood to explain why he is what he is. However, he never felt any remorse over all his murders or ruining others lives through theft. I guess the villain hero is not for me. Just because he truly loves two people (himself and his spouse) does not make a good person.

Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Well done Mariana.

I'm about 80% through my one. I'm determined to get there, even though it's been slow going. Unfortunately, not one of Ms Carlyle's best. It's not bad, but not totally wonderful either.
One Little Sin (MacLachlan Family, #2) by Liz Carlyle

message 271: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Yay! I finished my July read this morning. One Little Sin. 3 stars. I'm keeping on track with this challenge really well this year. Maybe cos I'm only doing 1 book per month and I'm managing it better.

I'll have to think about next month. I'm a little lukewarm about my Western I've chosen - A Touch of Flame - so maybe I'll check out some medieval books before I make my decision for August.

Capture my Heart. by Bobbie Smith.
About a Lord Alexander Wakefield, kidnapped by Barbary Pirates when he was seven. Only on page 27, his parents are awful people.

I like the counting for two challenges idea. Nice.

I decided to change my August book to The King's Man for medieval. I did start it ages ago but somehow got sidetracked and didn't get very far into it, so I decided I'll have another go.
The King's Man (Welsh Blades #1) by Elizabeth Kingston

Shaz I had a look at your pirate book. Love the wild hair on the cover model. I also feel sad for little Alexander. Oh well, it seems as if he grows up to develop a good head of hair and decent pecs, anyway LOL. Hope you enjoy your pirate read.

I loved Comanche Moon! Read it for a prior year RATA challenge and ended up reading the entire series.

I will avoid The Conqueror. I am not into bodice rippers.

I enjoyed the entire Comanche series. I gave three of the four books 5 stars. If you like westerns and Americana, I think adding to next year's series challenge is a great idea.

Jan (jan130) | 2703 comments Some of Judith McNaught's could, I guess, be termed 'mild bodice rippers'. I reread A Kingdom of Dreams a while ago and quite enjoyed it.

Yes, that is one of the few I enjoyed. Your recommendation was right on. Unfortunately, I have already read it.

I am considering Dark Before the Rising Sun by Laurie McBain. I read book 2 in the trilogy and thought it was okay. This book 3 is on one of the lists, and it was originally published in 1982.

I see that you planned to read Annie's Song for your Western. Did you end up reading it? I just finished and enjoyed it very much.

I also noticed that you plan The Duke of Shadows for September's Victorian book. I considered it as well. Looking forward to finding out how you enjoy it.

Duke of Shadows is one I'm looking forward! I wouldn't mind a buddy read for that since I struggle to get to these books without a reminder!
