I feel like it kind of fits the Tolkien comparison/description made here:

I think it would. I feel like creating an avatar in another game would work for this. Books like Ready Player One, for example.

The Legend of Grimm's Woods seems to fit this category.

The book is sort of an advanced "Choose Your Own Adventure" as you can elect to play as one of two characters (Hocus or Pocus), choose an animal sidekick, and tally points and keep notes on Quest Tracker sheets. I photocopied a Quest Tracker and played three times (or was it four?).

It was awesome and surprisingly intricate!
