I took this book out of the the Chevy Chase Md. Library in the mid-90s. I was in a phase of reading authors from the Golden Age of Mysteries (Allingham, Sayers, Marsh, Carr etc.). This book may have been set during or right after WWII but possibly during or after WWI. I believe it was set in England. The only thing I remember was that a man was posing as an Englishman, but he was really a spy/foreign agent from another country (Germany? Russia?). The way he was discovered is that he did not recognize another character's reference to a common nursery rhyme. Although his handlers taught him English and English history and customs, one can't always be taught everything that one normally learns in early childhood, such as nursery rhymes.

Maybe N or M by Agatha Christie? It features spies and nursery rhymes, and the right time period ( WWII).
