What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

► UNSOLVED: One specific book > A short story where some Sicilian (?) sailors land in a village/small town on the coast of Ireland and walk about the place. The locals are wary but curious. Possibly some kind of magical realism going on here

Matthew Wood | 1 comments Hi,

I'm trying to find the name of this short story that I read maybe ten years ago (I think it was written in the 19th or early 20th century though). I've been scouring the internet to no avail.

I'm pretty sure the sailors were Sicilian, but they could have been Sardinian. There was some kind of thing about how the
sailors and the locals had a similar character, both being islanders.

I read the book in English, I'm pretty sure it was an English-speaking author, but I guess it could have been a translation.

That's about all that I can recall. Any ideas gratefully received,

thanks!

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 51 where fewer eyes will see it.
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!

Capn | 3506 comments I did a quick text search on OpenLibrary, and Sardinian + Ireland + Sailor doesn't bring up too much, whereas Sicilian + Ireland + Sailor brings up many hits re: the Spanish Armada in Ireland. (Were Sicilian mercenaries part of the Spanish fleet?! I don't know!)

Anyway, if you are still looking, I might suggest adding the 'Spanish Armada in Ireland' to the search. I had started a list for The Spanish Armada a few months ago, so it's still in its infancy, but: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

ProjectGutenberg would also be a good place to check, given the age of the document. ;)
