ABANDONED. australian, for teens, girl has hideaway in a tree

I remember reading this book in high school... so approximately 18 years old.

The girl has a hideout away from home in a big hollowed out tree. Big enough to put a chair and hang a picture on the wall.
I'm sure there is a point in the story where she winds up being swept down a canal and she thinks she's going to die, but she fell in trying to save something.

Her family is really harsh on her.

Ann, I think it was relatively newish at the time but I'm not 100% sure.
Time period is whatever time period the book was written. I believe mid 90s
