I read this book a few years ago so and I’ve been thinking about this book for a long time.(POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD)Some of things I say in this post may not be in they book but even if you do find a book that doesn’t completely match everything that I’ve said make sure you send the suggustion anyway.

Also before you say it this book isn’t Jumper

I’m pretty sure that the name of this book has the word gate or key in it

The main character in this book either has the ability to create portals or teleport.He also had he power to open a gate or portal to another world or dimension.All I remember about the other world or dimension is that there’s a man that comes from a tree.Now back to the normal world.(I’m very unsure about this)I think the boy was born in some sort of faction or tribe.The boy then goes into the city or a town and meets a guy that teaches him how to beg.I’m pretty sure that at some point in the book he robs a house with the guy that was mentioned before.At the end of the book I’m pretty sure he finds out that his parents just wanted him for his powers.

This is part of a trilogy. I've heard the last book sucks, and have only read the first two. First one is really good.

And, I second Jennifer's suggestion.

Basically there is magic (ie: how the guy is in the tree), and portal magic is the best magic and banned. Parents had kid in the hopes that he might be have portal magic.
