Jennifer Thornton | 10 comments Ok, like I said in the title the book focused on the grandson who is born very weak and the only way to save him is for his grandfather to give up his life to save him - he uses some kind of magic that transfers his life force/knowledge/magic to save his grandson. The mage's son does not use magic and doesn't really have a big role in the story. The grandson is very powerful because he has the knowledge and abilities that his grandfather had. When the grandson gets older something happens to make his power manifest and he can hear his grandfather talking to him in his mind. On his journeys he comes across a woman trapped inside an emerald? See through crystal/stone? She knew his grandfather and they end up falling in love. That's all I remember.

Jennifer around what year did you read this book?

How far into the story does the grandfather sacrifice his life? Can you describe the plot near the start of the book (i.e., what often appears in the publisher's blurb)?

Jennifer Thornton | 10 comments I read this book in the early 90s, I think. The plot near the beginning of the book is what I initially described - a baby is born very weak and his grandfather who is a powerful mage transfers his life force/knowledge/magic to save him. You dont find out until later that he transfered some of his life force into the baby. When the boy grows older, he can talk to his grandfather before he eventually fades away - something like that. I don't remember a lot of the book otherwise I would give more information. It's been almost 20 years.

Jennifer Thornton | 10 comments Ok, it isn't Changeling, but the plot is similar. The whole book is set in Fantasy though - no Earth, no modern day anything - Earth doesn't even exist in this book. I'd almost classify it as High Fantasy because there are elves, wizards, goblins, witches and all of those kind of creatures. I read this book around the same time I read the Belgariad series by David Eddings - in the 90s.

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 176 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!
