The Next Time You See Me - September 5, 2014
So I'm at 25% so far and enjoying it so far.
Couple of thoughts:
15% in "At last his steps became shorter and faster, and then he was walking his back legs forward and hiking up his bottom end, watching Wyatt over his should again suspiciously - the look had always struck Wyatt as suspicious, anyway, and made him laugh, but not lately, not since last week - and then the dog was finished ... "
This sentence just stuck out for me, are we beingtold hinted at the killer this early?
I'm also struggling with the kids storylines a bit, they are supposed to be 13 right? Reading older to me.
Despite that, I'm intrigued and wanting to read more.

Oh no, I've just read the 'food fight' part. My heart goes out to Emily :(
I had something similar happen to me at school (on the school bus rather than the cafeteria) and it hit hard with me.

It's only 9am here. I haven't started yet! I forgot about the time difference. I should have started yesterday. lol
There is no end date. You are both welcome to join. Lynn is a much faster reader than I am, so you have plenty of time. :)

Okay then :)
I am! I just started the new job Monday, so I have had no reading time, but I'm trying...slowly. Hopefully, I'll make some progress tonight.
Good! Lots of trainings right now and I'm exhausted with the new schedule, but I'll get used to it. :)

Good luck Krisitie, my life is changing too so I can understand what you are going through.

So, I fell a bit behind on my reading, but I'm hoping to catch up soon. Starting reading this one again and I'm only on page 73, but I can't believe that (view spoiler) I'm curious how this is going to turn out.
I also feel bad for poor Emily. She seems to have no one to really fit in with. It's difficult enough to be a 13 year old girl, but being the unpopular, picked on kid is just horrible.
I found it interesting how the author linked the characters. So far, I like the way it is woven together and the characters seem fairly interesting. I'm looking forward to reading more, quickly I hope!

I do like the way it is structured, too. I like Emily. She reminds me of me in a lot of ways. A great reminder of just how bad middle school could be.
The band director made me laugh. I was in marching band in high school and I'd hate to think he was destroying his family life just to make our lives miserable.
Every one in this town seems to interact with every one else.

I have to totally agree with there.

I am having the same suspicion. He doesn't seem to be related in the story otherwise. I am almost halfway through this book. Its hard to read fast with Quantum physics bubbling in your head. I hate interviews :/

Thinking about this more I have to say that the book has been compared to Gone Girl, I think because of the missing person and horrible characters but I think it's more like The Casual Vacancy

Really? I didn't think the characters were that likeable. Maybe not as horrible as Gone Girl but I still didn't take to them.
I'm not getting a Gone Girl feeling from it at all. I think sometimes, if there is a big twist at the end, people automatically compare to Gone Girl, even if the two books are not similar at all. I haven't gotten to the end yet, so I'm not sure if that's the reason in this case, but I definitely don't see the similarity. I could see the Casual Vacancy similarity a bit though.

I don't know if I'd be friends with these charactets, @Lynn. But they all seem very sympathetic to me. Though I disagree with many of their actions, but they all seem to have some redeemable characteristics.
Emily, the schoolteacher, the band director, the nurse, Wyatt, even Christopher are sympathetic. Of course, I'm not done yet. Hope to get more read today.

I agree. I think the characters in this book are much more realistic than those in Gone Girl. I feel like these are just flawed people. There are certain times I like a character, then I don't. It is sort of like good people making bad decisions. I can sympathize with most of them.

I'm still trying to finish this one!! My new job has been too busy. I'll finish it soon though, so I can add to the discussion! I'm dying to know what people are referring to.

Book Synopsis
A debut novel by award-winning author Holly Goddard Jones, about the people surprisingly connected to the discovery of a dead woman’s body in a small town.
Thirteen-year-old Emily Houchens doesn’t have many friends. She finds more comfort playing make-believe in the woods near her house in Roma, Kentucky, than with her classmates, who find her strange and awkward. When she happens upon a dead body hidden in the woods one day, she decides not to tell anyone about her discovery—a choice that begins to haunt her.
Susanna Mitchell has always been a good girl, the dutiful daughter and wife. While her older sister Ronnie trolled bars for men and often drove home at sunrise, Susanna kept a neat house, a respectable job, a young daughter. But when Ronnie goes missing, and Susanna realizes that she’s the only person in Roma who truly cares about her sister’s fate, she starts to question her quiet life and its value.
The Next Time You See Me is the story of how one woman’s disappearance exposes the ambitions, prejudices, and anxieties of a small southern town and its residents, who are all connected, sometimes in unexpected ways. Emily; Susannah; Tony, a failed baseball star-turned-detective, aspiring to be the county’s first black sheriff; and Wyatt, a fifty-five-year-old factory worker tormented by a past he can’t change and by a love he doesn’t think he deserves. Their stories converge in a violent climax that reveals not just the mystery of what happened to Ronnie but all of their secret selves.
