I wanted to send my book to someone and they gave me an gmail address. I do have an eBook but I've never sent one before and I'm having some difficulty figuring it out. I've read that you send a PDF file but I don't even know how i get this. As when I submitted my book it was in a word doc. and the paperback provider sent the file to Kindle for the transfer. So any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Any ebook format is just as any other file. Whether is your ebook in Word, PDF, mobi or epub, it doesn't matter. Simpliest way is make a folder on your desktop and place your ebook inside. Go to your gmail and attach the ebook file from that folder and send. That easy
It works just like any other mail attachment.
PDF and DOC/DOCX will usually work on anything but will be far from ideal. The best way is knowing what e-reader the person has and converting it to its native format (which should work better, especially if structure/headings are done properly). There might be more but I use Calibre for the conversion.

If you have the doc file just save it as a pdf file to save it. The reason for doing this is that it will be harder for the recipient to edit or claim this book as their own if it is in pdf. But nothing is foolproof.
