Daniel | 10 comments I read this in 2013-14. It is about a African American kid that really likes remote controlled cars. One day he goes to this underground, kids-only amusement parks to race but he passes out in the middle of the race. He spends the next few months in a coma and once he wakes up he realizes that he has powers and that he is now made up of dark matter. His powers are practically limitless (although he sticks with some pretty basic ones). We later see that he is a type of person (it had a specific name but I can't remember it) made to balance out the number of powered people on earth (for every evil powered person there is a good powered person and vice versa. There is also a sequel where we find out that when he was in the coma his consciousness was in another universe where he had to prove himself worthy of the powers he would get and also get a necklace or medallion or something that would either channel his powers or do something else. I'm sorry, but I can't remember what it does. The sequel book has the necklace type thing (which is blue) covering the front cover. This is all I remember. Thanks for the help

The Marvelous Effect by Troy CLE seems to match your description.

(Google search -- site:www.goodreads.com "fantasy" "young adult" "controlled cars" "coma")
