Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments So, I heard this on Radio Free Skaro. They weren't certain of it either, so take this with a swimming pool of salt:

Apparently, there is a rumor going around that the BBC aren't happy with Chibnall and are getting ready to fire him. And JW will leave out of loyalty to Chibnall.

I can't think why the BBC would be displeased. The ratings are fairly good, from what I've heard. I don't know if the move to Sundays has helped or harmed the show. In any case, that move is the BBC's doing.

Anyway, it would be extremely disappointing if this is true, because I like 13 at lot, and I feel most of the episodes this season have been quite good.

But again, swimming pool of salt.

Kitty-Lydia Dye | 26 comments It wouldn't surprise me, unfortunately. They moved the show to another slot, there isn't going to be a Christmas ep, there's plenty of people who can't stand the fact that the Doctor is female or that there is a diverse cast :( If this happens, then all the naysayers will turn around and say 'there, that's proof we were right' and then the show will probably get cancelled again.
I really, really hope this isn't the case, as I was going to give up on the show because of how Moffat wrote the series, and didn't have much hope, but I loved the episodes and characters for this series and it has reignited my love for Doctor Who.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2401 comments I'm not going to panic until I hear something from a reliable source, as knuckleheads on the internet do this all the time about every franchise out there.

Will be sad if it happens, as I'm really liking this season.

It would also add to the pattern that the angry fanboys who say they just want to make a thing better end up shutting it down instead.

Starburst: Doctor Who BBC Confirms Series 12
The second rumour that’s currently doing the rounds is that new showrunner Chris Chibnall hasn’t been happy behind the scenes, and is set to quit after Series 12.

We can only speculate as to his possible reasons – if indeed the story is true – but Chibnall told us quite firmly in January 2013 that he didn’t want the showrunner job, and it’s possible after the success of Broadchurch that the BBC pursued him for it against his better wishes. Or simply that he changed his mind.

Either way, if there is any truth to this rumour then it’s also been said that Jodie Whittaker would not want to continue on as the Doctor without Chibnall at the helm, and would leave at the same time as he did.

Both Chibnall and Whittaker have certainly looked happy enough during the pre-publicity for Series 11, and with the ratings success they’ve had it would be a loss for them both to go after one more series. But the BBC is an odd, double-headed beast (the programme is essentially now a co-production between the BBC and its autonomous subsidiary BBC Studios), and Chibnall would seem to be happier working with his own production company on series like Broadchurch.

Rick | 2261 comments I'm inclined to think that the rumors about Chibnall leaving (and Whittaker following) are being started and propagated by the angry fanboys who can't deal with a female Doctor. The same mentality that has destroyed other franchises because they think they "own" the product because of how much they used to love it (before it fell into the wrong hands).

But it's all certainly plausible.

Also, I hadn't heard that the Xmas special had been moved to New Years. I think I'd actually prefer an annual New Years special instead of a Christmas special. Or maybe an anniversary special every year around the end of November.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments I think the rumors of Chibnall and Jodie leaving are just that RUMORS. As others have said it seems like it is naysayers who don't like Jodie as the Doctor (ARGH a FEMALE as the Doctor) who are spreading the thing.

The move to Sunday nights I think has effected things somewhat, especially in the hometown UK. If I recall Doctor Who in all the incarnations has ALWAYS been on Saturday Nights. [Need someone from UK to verify that]

I know the move to Sunday has affected my viewing - namely Sunday is not a good night for watching the show. I have too much going on around the time it's on (6 pm in MTZ) which is generally when I'm trying to get dinner on the table and a reluctant 16 year old to pack up her stuff to go home for the week. I can and do watch the episode later in the week, but it's just not the same.

I think sometime during the Peter Davison run it was moved to Mondays and Tuesdays or something like that. That didn't help the ratings either. Although maybe that was during Colin Baker's run? I'm not sure, but it was sometime in there. The DVDs list the air dates as being on consecutive nights.

message 9: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2261 comments Actually it appears it might have been Sylvester McCoy's run. I just looked it up.

message 10: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2401 comments I don't have cable, so I get my episodes the day after through iTunes.

But, as far as I know, the ratings have stayed fairly consistent with the previous season or two.
Maybe a slight dip, but nothing like the apocalypse some fanboys are making it out to be.

message 11: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2261 comments From the figures I saw, the first episode of the season got really high viewer ratings. It's leveled off to amounts comparable to the last couple seasons since then. So it would appear that lots of people watched the initial episode for novelty of a new Doctor and then everything went back to normal. But I think that was just UK figures that I was looking at. Worldwide figures might be different. But it's certainly no ratings apocalypse by any criteria.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2401 comments So, kind of takes the wind out of the doom and gloom, when they just announced Jodi ad Chibnall are both signed for a second season...

But, I have faith that the awful people on youtube will find a way to blame this on feminism or the secret PC cabal or left handed vegans...

UK here, but I only started watching when it was the Ninth Doctor (wasn't even born when it was McCoy :o ) And it was pretty much drilled into my head that Doctor Who was Saturday. I still think, oh, Doctor Who this Saturday, and only last minute do I remember it is Sunday. The slightly changing times means I keep on forgetting as well, sometimes seven, other times twenty to seven, so I leave it to record on my digibox and normally catch it just when it is ending -- are views registered when people record them off skyboxes?

Rick | 2261 comments I just heard that the next season - Season 12 - won't air until 2020!!!! AARRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm looking for confirmation of this (it is listed as such on IMDB, so that seems pretty likely). And now I'm seeing that it's been financed through Season 15. Once again, looking for confirmation, but if that's that case, that is certainly good news. Although I'm seeing rumors again that Chibnall (and Whittaker) are leaving after Season 12. That's saddening.

I think it's true, as I remember and article on BBC saying that the New Year ep would be the only one in 2019, and the new season would be the year after that. ;.; I'm already getting withdrawal pangs.

Yeah. I guess I'll be re-watching the whole series yet again next year. ;)

Might there be some hope of lots of novels and comics coming out perhaps? I hope so. Especially an audio drama.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments Lets look at this from a technical production stand point. For this past Season 11 they started filming in late Jan 2018, finished around late Apr early May 2018. Post Production went on during the summer months (til around Aug?) and the season began airing in early Oct 2018. I think they had originally said it would start airing in Sept 2018. They apparently didn't allow for something or some post production work took longer than originally expected.. I thought I read somewhere that they allowed, or usually spent approx. six months from filming to post production completion.

Here's your confirmation Rick:
BBC - Doctor Who Series 12 Announcement:
Charlotte Moore, Director of Content added, “We’re delighted that the Doctor and her friends will be returning to thrill audiences in 2020. I know Chris and the whole team are already working on a whole new set of exciting adventures. In the meantime we’ve got a very special episode on New Year’s Day for everyone to enjoy.”

Thanks, Lori. I'm always worried about posting what amounts to only being rumors.

And I suppose I should look at having yet another year with no new Who, as yet another opportunity to re-watch the entire series from start to finish all over again. But I'm still not finished with my epic re-watch of the all surviving classic episodes that I started in 2017. I got derailed when the opportunity to watch the new season as it aired presented itself to me. I'll be getting back to that sometime after the New Year's Special. Then I'll move onto getting to as many of the Eighth Doctor audios that I get my greedy little hands on (I also have the first John Hurt audio set that I've been waiting to get to), before moving to the new series again. So much Who to do! :D

message 21: by Jadetyger (new)

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments 2020? Well, at least we have a season 12. Why do these skips in time happen? They want to give the cast/crew time off? The BBC is so scheduled out that 2020 was the first slot available?

message 22: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2261 comments I have so many issues with these "breaks" that it really frustrates me. The first, for the new series at least, was after Tennant's 3rd year. They compensated with a series of Specials to tied people over and keep the momentum going. Then there was the one during Smith's years that broke a "season" into two segments that aired nearly a year apart. This allowed the BBC to fund that season over the span of two years, and stretched Smith's tenure to include the 50th anniversary year. This also allowed the showrunners to call what amounted to two shortened seasons, as a single season. Then there was the year break between Capaldi's second & third seasons.
On one hand this is keeping actors around for four years during a "three season" contract. It wouldn't be so bad if the number of episodes was higher, but with only 10-12 episodes a season it's just frustrating, annoying and aggravating. If I didn't love the series so much I'd just stop watching. Although, I suppose, part of the problem this year is that I'm watching it as it aired. In previous years I've had to wait for the discs to come out. Maybe I should just go back to watching them on disc and ignore the whole original broadcast times.

I agree. Another thing about Tennant's "Specials" Season besides it being only 5 stories, well 4 really is it turned out to be his final season. Actually if I recall correctly he had announced it was going to be his final season before they decided it would be a series of stretched out specials.
