message 2: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments An elderly Samsung without email capabilities. If I want the internet I have a tablet with a 3G sim and I use that.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Mine is a Samsung which is only used for sending and receiving texts. It will do more (ie phone and camera) but I have a much better real camera to use and I can't be bothered to faff around using the phone bit of it. It probably would send emails or browse the internet, but again I have much superior tools for those jobs, rather than trying to read on the tidgy screen.

I did want a mobile that was just that without all the unwanted extras but it doesn't seem as though there is much of a choice.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've got a Samsung Galaxy II. Why? Cuz it was free.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I've got a Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini. It's the first smartphone I've had and I find it easy to use.

I bought it, SIM free, cheap from Amazon. I use it with a Virgin VIP SIM which includes unlimited calls, texts and data.

I like it as it's quite compact but the screen is big enough for me to see easily. It's used mainly for calls and texts but I do use the data sometimes for maps, bus times etc.
I have tried out the camera and video and both are fine but I usually use a proper camera. It's a good back up if I've forgotten to take my camera with me.
I also use the calendar to remind me of appointments and things.
I have got quite a few apps on it which I use occasionally such as Google, Catch Up TV, a flashlight and a few games. But I mostly use a tablet for the games.

Wouldn't want to be without it now. I'll probably keep this one till it conks out. It does what I want it to and I don't have to have the latest phone out.

S. Aksah | 152 comments owww..looks like everyone are just using the mobile as just ..errr..phone??

message 7: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | -183 comments Had an iPhone 4 hubby wanted it, so I got an iPhone 5s and use it for everything. FB, goodreads and running apps. Pictures and videos and also IM to meet up with friends. Cooking apps as well.

message 8: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Samsung Galaxy III, because it is pretty much a mini computer. Internet, emails (several), Goodreads app, calendar, music, maps, rudimentary word-processor. I now use it as a satnav in the car too.

My only gripe is the poor battery life. But then I do use it a lot, and not just as a phone.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I use mine as an alarm.

message 10: by Rosen (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Smartphones are good because most have Kindle/Kobo/Nook apps so you don't need to buy multiple eReaders to test your books.

message 11: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | -183 comments Yes our tomtom Satnav is now obselete too. It's just easier to use the phone.

message 12: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Aug 16, 2014 05:37AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ha! Tried to use mine as a satnav and the stupid thing drained the battery trying to find it's location.

message 13: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Yup, forgot about the kindle app. My galaxy is also my library. It makes a fair kindle substitute.

Patti - GPS uses a lot of juice. I tend to switch it off when I'm not using it and plug the phone into the charger when I'm using it as a satnav.

message 14: by David (new)

David Manuel | 1112 comments Geeze, I've got a Motorola v6 Razr flip-phone. I use it to make telephone calls and send text messages, because that's pretty much all it can do.

I didn't even know Razr flip phones were still around!

I've got a Sony Xperia something. They updated the operating system (Android 4.IDK) and now it makes me want to throw the damn thing across the room. However, I use it to collect email mostly, but also to come on Goodreads. Today I have been checking ebook formatting on it too.

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments I've got the HTC One Mini, which I use mostly as a phone, calls, texts, whatsapp, emails very light internet browsing.

I do use it as an alarm and for taking pics of things not in my size in stores etc to source online later.

Amazingly, you can still buy an unlocked one on Amazon for about 50 USD! But it's v3. My bad that I gave myself credit for a v6 when they never even got that far!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Mines a BlackBerry, use it for everything but not reading books. Its fairly crap as a telephone though.

That's quite incredible. These things do last then. ;)

Sadly, though, I can't use it to control the 8-track player in my Chevy Corvair...

My daughter uses her phone as a remote for the TV .

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'd not read books on my phone any more than I'd read on my iPad.

Ick.

message 25: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | -183 comments This is what too much technology does to kids, I was with my daughter and had to buy a 21 birthday card to send to Birmingham because we can't make the party.

My daughter says"how we going to send the card, are you driving up there?" "No, thank God there is a company called Royal Mail to deliver it for us!" Lol

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dunno whether to laugh or cry, Bookworm.

message 27: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | -183 comments I found it funny, she didn't see why it was funny though.

message 28: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I've got the samsung galaxy s2. It was working great until I dropped it in the toilet... Still alive just about but quite unhealthy!

I can upgrade in November but looking in to upgrading early. Everything I like seems crazy expensive!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments What's with kids these days taking their phone into the toilet?

Fucking gross.

message 30: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments A silver nokia something
I'm on Tesco PAYG Lite and if someone texts me, I'll wait until I can email them back on a computer as I'm too tight to spend 4p to reply :)
By the time I get to a computer I've forgotten to reply anyway.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yay Joo!

I do Facebook or email.

You can't beat my daughter, dropped a day old phone in the river whilst cycling.

Katy | 2662 comments I would like to say that I didn't take my phone into the toilet on purpose. Usually I take it out of my back pocket and put it on side in the kitchen. The one time I forgot, it fell out of my back pocket and into the toilet

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments HTC something. Use it for loads but don't like the phone. Can upgrade in Oct. Might look at getting sim free, talk talk do good sim only deals

Excuses, excuses. ;)

Kids these days.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My brother in law keeps his phone in his shirt breast pocket and has to date dropped two I phones down the loo. One he got back, the other was a public French Turkish style toilet and no way did he even think about getting it back.

I think she really took it in there so she could take a selfie and send it to you, Patti.

message 38: by Mo (new)

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments I have 100 minutes a month on my phone but I use about 10. Mostly use mine for the data. Audible or Kindle, Facebook and suchlike but very little texting or phoning. Strangely when I go to Paris I seem to make far more calls or incoming calls. Roll on the free data in December.

message 39: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments I've got an IBM Simon. Yes, it's fairly big and you need both hands to carry it because of the weight. True the battery only lasts an hour but I can send and receive faxes once I've plugged it in so essentially I have myself a mobile office.

message 40: by Gingerlily - The Full Wild (last edited Aug 16, 2014 04:59PM) (new)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I have a HTC Desire S which is about two and a half years old and still working fine. I use it for facebook, email, texting, photos, wordfeud, bus times, games, exchange rate, dropbox, goodreads, alarm, and the very occasional phone call.

message 41: by S. (new)

S. Aksah | 152 comments Mobile fax? ha thats quite something!

message 42: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments I have a Galaxy S3 mini which has been great but is starting to get a bit glitchy and freezes a lot (I think I possibly have a bad effect on electronics!) If and when it gives out or gets to the point at which I need a new one, I'm thinking of an S4 or S4 mini.

message 43: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited Aug 17, 2014 12:46AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Mobile faxes aren't new - I had a Nokia 9310 communicator at least 10 years ago - it was a very clever piece of equipment but it died when replacement batteries were hard to get and very expensive . It cost a lot of money - I may be wrong but I think it was about £1000, but if you wanted to work with contracts etc and be mobile it was brilliant. When I got back to my office I forwarded my received faxes to my office machine to print out.

message 44: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I have an iPhone 4s. I use it as a satnav in the car, for listening to audiobooks and tunes (it replaced my ageing iPod), it's an ereader for if I don't have my tablet with me, a camera when I don't have a real camera (am I the only one that goes to locations from my books and takes selfies holding the paperback?), It tells me about traffic delays, flight times, cinema times, twitter, Facebook, messages, it can remotely set the set top box to record a programme, my data contract (3 One Plan) allows tethering, so it acts as a wifi hotspot for my iPad when there's no public wifi, messages, Skype, podcasts, iPlayer etc if I'm desperate...

Oh, and the occasional phone call.

message 45: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh, Tim! I never thought of that - East coast beaches, here I (and Message in a Bottle paperback) come!

message 46: by S. (new)

S. Aksah | 152 comments selfies with the paperback?? ha that's a marketing idea..

message 47: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I have a Galaxy 3 mini (somewhere)! I use it mainly for work, forget to charge it and often hear it ringing from the cupboard where I store my handbags. I get 400 free minutes a month and often have 390 unused!

message 48: by S. (new)

S. Aksah | 152 comments owwww!! i wonder how many mobile phones everyone has at all!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I've got a UK PAYG BlackBerry, a little Nokia on my French contract, there's also another Nokia with a UK sim in it and a bit of credit left over from the burglar alarm system. OH has a BB like mine but had to buy an I phone for the new burglar alarm. There's a spare BB in the cupboard which my daughter gave us when she changed hers over. Too many!
