At an arcade, carnival, or school, the protagonist plays with a fortune telling machine (a man in a box, think Zoltar from Big). He is then sucked into the machine and must find a way to communicate with his friends in order to be freed. I read this as a child (pre- 2008) and found it rather horrifying. While trapped in the machine, he has no speech and limited movement. I vaguely remember something about the machine being hidden behind a red curtain and there being hushed rumors about it, which prompted the protagonist to investigate. I remember very little.
