It's either a biography, history, or history fiction. It's about a japanese girl who moves to the US to go to school. She meets an american man named Richard and they end up falling in love. He ends up going to fight the war, and she ends up in an internment camp. While in the internment camp, Richard comes to visit her and she becomes pregnant. She tries to hide her pregnancy by using traditional japanese binding. She ends up having the baby in the internement camp. Later, when she is released, she finds out Richard has been MIA in Japan. She moves with her kid to Japan. At the end of the story, Richard comes walking up her driveway in Japan.

This sounds like Danielle Steele's Silent Honour to me, although I just looked it up and the american boyfriend appears to be called Peter instead of Richard...
