5.9 - Acts of Heroism

The Bronze Star Medal was established by Executive Order 9419 on 4 February 1944 and is the 5th highest combat decoration in the US Armed Forces. It is awarded for acts of heroism or merit under combat, and can be awarded to members of any of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
Read a book with a main character or subject who is an active-duty or former member of the armed forces of any nation (real or imagined).
ex. Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, On Basilisk Station, Forever Blue
Required: If the military connection is not obvious from the book's main page include a reference when you post.

Laura Fazekas | 171 comments Would a book written by a former member of the armed forces work for this? I'm thinking of using Leaders: Myth and Reality by Stanley McChrystal; a retired US Army General.

I just want to check if this would fit the task.

Thanks!

The author's military status does not matter, the main character or subject of the book must be an active-duty or former member of the armed forces of any nation.

Pia Would a book in the Gibson Vaughn series work?

The main character is an ex marine. It's noted in the description of books 1 & 3, but is not so clear on the main page of book 2.

The Short Drop (Gibson Vaughn, #1) by Matthew FitzSimmons
Poisonfeather (Gibson Vaughn, #2) by Matthew FitzSimmons
Cold Harbor (Gibson Vaughn, #3) by Matthew FitzSimmons

You can use the marine reference in book 1 or 3 for book 2.

She is a part of MI5 not sure if that is considered armed forces."

According to politics.co.uk
"Although the "MI" stands for "Military Intelligence", MI5 is a civilian agency without formal executive powers."

MI5 and MI6: "They do not form part of the British armed forces nor are they under the control of the Ministry of Defence and do not use military ranks."

Wanda (wanda71) | 1770 comments I would like to use Caribou's Gift for this task. The male MC's service is not listed on the MP review. Can I use the following quotation from the book as a reference?

Page 5
"Mission #732: Improve my reputation as a badass so people don’t make stupid requests. To those who wondered, while some preferred keeping mental notes, Kyle resorted to thinking of things in terms of missions, a throw over from his military days. Some he completed successfully, such as Mission #713, getting Betty-Sue to give him a piece of her famous apple pie. Success! Others he failed, like Mission #714, his attempt at getting a second piece resulting in bruised knuckles from her infamous wooden spoon."

OK "Kyle resorted to thinking of things in terms of missions, a throw over from his military days. "
Please include the reference when you post

Michelle (michellesoleil) | 361 comments So, this may be a bit of a stretch... Anyway, Night Game is part of a series about men who are American "special forces" and who were recruited for some top-secret paranormal project. If the series is about the paranormal project rather than the military training, would it still count as "former member"?

Thanks. :)

Is there a reference to their military status? Without identifying info "special forces" alone doesn't work.

KSMary | 1181 comments I believe this character would work, wouldn't it: Zero Day. John Puller is a former top investigator in the US Army's CID.

Rina | 564 comments I'd like to read The Light Between Oceans for this task. Is it enough reference on book's main page?

"AFTER FOUR HARROWING YEARS ON THE WESTERN FRONT, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. "

Deedee | 2344 comments Would A Very Long Engagement work for this task? The heroine engages in .... a relentless quest to find out whether her fiancé, officially "killed in the line of duty," might still be alive. The time frame is during and immediately after World War I, and the heroine interacts with many soldiers whilst trying to find her soldier-fiance. Thanks for checking!

"a main character or subject who is an active-duty or former member of the armed forces of any nation"
A main character would need to be present throughout most of the story so if her soldier is lost to her through most of the book he would not qualify.
