I have written the fragments into a Word file Elin, just can't get them joined up. They may not even be fragments of the same story in the end! When I feel up to reading and giving you some feedback, I'll send you a PM with my email address. We're trying to get through the early, really painful, stages of the grieving process at the moment and my brain isn't in the right place for it just now.

Should really go through it a few more times but my new and shiny has gotten 25000 words instead... Hopefully you will not be too horrified by my scribbles, my imagination has a life of its own...

Still reading in between sick children and an ailing father.
Got some bad news yesterday, about my second youngest son. Although it has been apparent that he is an autist for a while, I had hoped for an Asperger diagnose but he has infantile autism which makes his prospects as an adult much more dire and his general state of health has been deteriorating rapidly this year. A lot of stress related behaviour like wringing his hands together until the skin is raw and sore, together with tics (he also has Tourette syndrome) in the throat making him unable to swallow anything but yoghurt and ice-cream. It broke my heart yesterday, at the doctors office, when he asked them when he would get well and it would all stop because the answer to that was never...

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1252 comments Oh, my dear Elin, I am so sorry. Our prayers will be with you as you and your family work toward the best life your son can have. I hope where you live there are sufficient services that will ease your responsibilities and make your son as comfortable and productive as he is able. His health issues are the most prevalent at this time. Has he been checked for food allergies that might interfere with his swallowing? He may not be able to articulate what distresses him. Your medical team will give you the best options for going forward. At least you now have a diagnosis and can plan from there. Blessings, my dear.

Mary | 171 comments Elin,I’m so sorry to hear about your son’s ill health and diagnosis. It must be so distressing especially when you can so little to alleviate his stress. You’re in my thoughts.

message 113: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Thank you ladies! It is strange that when something you kind of know is confirmed, it still feels like hitting a brickwall. He was the last of my children that did not have a diagnosis and I was kind of hoping... but it is what it is. I am rather thankful for my happy disposition or else I would probably struggled a lot more and of course my Mr Darcy, my husband, not the fictional character although he is fabulous - he couldn't hold a candle to my husband ❤. We are not currently getting any help from anyone but hopefully we will get Tinju's school situation more adapted to his needs, now that his diagnosis is confirmed ( fingers crossed).

message 114: by Anji (new)

Anji | 735 comments Oh Elin, so sorry to hear about your son. I don't know if it would help your family, but when our son was diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum, our research found that a gluten-free and dairy-free diet might help. It was a resounding success for him eventually but the first few weeks were very difficult as he suffered a "withdrawal-type" effect untill it was all out of his sytem. Just thought I'd mention it.

message 115: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments I tried the diet on my oldest son who as Asperger but it did not have any affect on him, still worthy of a try on Tinju though. Thank you for reminding me of this possibility Anji!

Elin, I am so sorry! My youngest son has autism, but it took a while to definitively diagnosis him because we were his 5th home and 3rd foster family. We didn't know if it was an understandable level of anxiety - he would scream every time someone would come to our house, every time someone left our house, and every time we went anywhere. It wasn't until he was three that both we and the diagnosing doctor was sure.

Ricky has mild autism, but it's still a lot of work, and we wonder about his future.

I don't have a lot of advice for you, but I'm available for prayers. I'll do that now, and ask any time you want more.

Thoughts: We've been told that doctors don't really give the diagnosis of Asperger's anymore, and all autists (which is a new word to me) are considered under the umbrella of ASD. Were you told something similar?

It's so hard to know at this point what life is going to be like for him at this point. Don't worry about all that right now. Just focus on getting him the services that he needs. Whatever he qualifies for, great. Sign up for an evaluation very soon. The swallowing thing MIGHT be possible to resolve with a speech therapist. My premature (non-autistic) middle son couldn't swallow baby food (????) until we had a speech therapist work with him on a regular basis.

I hope you don't view this unsolicited advice negatively. If want an ear, feel free to PM me.

Marlene, I am grateful for all advice coming my way. It can be very helpful with new and fresh thoughts. I will mention your suggestion to his doctor on Friday, when we have an appointment. We are currently checking if he has reflux-issues as that would explain some of the sounds he is making and his pain around the heart area in addition to his reluctance to swallow.
In Norway, all is given the ASD as well but my oldest has what was previously called Asperger which is a highly functional autist but Tinju has what was previously called infantile autism which means he has a much more severe degree of autism. He is, amongst other things, not very easy to understand. He speech is flawless but he tells his stories in such a disjointed fashion and leaving out the significant that it is very hard to understand what he is trying to say.

Checking for reflux is a good idea. Good luck on Friday! Prayers for a fruitful doctor appointment were just sent up. My youngest son has ASD and ADHD. My biggest challenges with him are: 1) He gets distressed SO easily and it's SO difficult to get him to calm down, and 2) he has no intrinsic motivation to do well academically. We have a meeting with his teacher on Monday because he is currently basically refusing to do anything. Argh! I think he basically has a bad case of spring fever. :-(

Summer break is here and we are celebrating with a bout of the chicken pox, meh... It is better to get it done now though as we are travelling to the North in 3 weeks. Next weekend there is a Viking festival nearby and I am crossing my fingers that everyone will be recovered by then :)
I have not read anything for the last week except for a little history which is a record of sorts, I have been busy writing instead.
I do have several books waiting for my attention and one does need a respite no and again from the brutality of the Viking era...

Humm, savage as in rape or other violence. It depends on who it happens to and the context if I can handle it.

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Marlene: The chickenpox are rather common in Norway, we do not get vaccinated against it so my three youngest have had it these last couple of weeks. My twelve year old daughter is not too happy about the ones on her face though...

Sara: I am alluding to rape, although not with the gory details. It does not involve ODC, neither as victims nor perpetrators. The Vikings held slaves that they called thralls and their life was miserable. Since the Vikings had a binary sexuality, both the male and female thralls was abused. If they displeased the owner, they would lose hands, feet or get branded. While the slaves was treated abominable, the high ranking females of the time had some advantages compared to the Regency ladies. The Vikings was full of contradictions...

message 128: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Sara, I forgot... They also took frilles. A frille was a lower ranking female that the father presented to the high ranking Viking as his mostress, to secure a connection with him. They were treated well and lived with the family. The more money you had the more frilles you could keep, some had 3-4 frilles...

Elin, I can understand that! I remember my sister (5 years older) and I both got the chicken pox, and my mom smearing us with some pink chalky stuff that covered up the itchy areas and gave some relief. She gave us orders not to itch because any scabs that came off would definitely scar. I picked one off my leg on purpose because I didn't care about my leg and and I was curious to see what the scar would like like. (Is scar the right word?) Anyway, at another time, I remember my sister touching the scabs on her face. I warned her not to, but she was overconfident and wanted to check them out. And a particularly large one FELL OFF her face. I remember her look of horror when she realized what had just happened.

Do you know why your country doesn't vaccinate against it?

message 134: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Marlene: It is not on the vaccination program in Norway because it is a fairly benign illness that rarely leads to any serious problems. Only people with serious health issues are offered the vaccine.
It may scar if you scratch though...
We use something called "whitewash" to relieve the itching but the effects are questionable.

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments I am rewriting it a little Sara.
I tried to watch the first episode of the TV show Vikings but I could not stomach it... It gave me some insight on what to omit though so I am removing small parts. I do still not romanticize the era.
Editing takes forever though, I do not believe I have the patience to become a real writer. lol

Yes. Editing and writing are not the same as reading. You get taken out of the enjoyment of the plot and are focusing on grammar, etc. That's why I never proof read my own stuff without someone else looking at it. I always miss things. ;) Still looking forward to it.

Interesting. I actually remember the onset of my chicken pox even though I was pretty young. I was out of state with my family at the funeral of an uncle. I remember absolutely wilting very suddenly. I'm sure that was just the fever, but I remember recognizing that something was really the matter with me.

I'm honestly glad my kids don't have to go through with it. It wasn't fun, and the rash as well as the lotion were annoying. Two out of my six kids are major scab pickers. (Ages 6 and 111) Horrible, horrible. They ignore my admonishments of, "Let God heal it!"
They're constantly coming to me with complaints of, "I'm bleeding!" Argh! Those two would end up with scars all over their bodies if they had the chicken pox. I'm sure of it.

But ... but … but … childhood chickenpox makes a person susceptible to its bigger, badder brother later in life -- the dreaded Shingles. My sister-in-law is currently dealing with Shingles even though she has had the vaccine for it. They say she has a milder case because of the vaccine but still very uncomfortable.

message 141: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 245 comments Yes, my mother had the shingles and it was very painful...
The Norwegian government has concluded that the vaccine isn't good enough to offer nationally. It does prevent the serious following illness but does little for chickenpox itself and does not prevent you from getting the shingles. It is available to buy if you want to though. The national vaccine program is free.
