27 - a book featuring an extinct or imaginary creature
I'm reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secretshere. Dobby plays a big role in this one and it's the first time the house elves are mentioned in the series and then there is the basilisk.
Do you think "imaginary creature" is something like the daemons in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy? They definitely feature in the trilogy. There are also the Jurassic Park books.
One of Blake Crouch's Pines series would be good for this. Those beasts! (I can't remember if they had a name?)
Sara wrote: "Hmm...imaginary creatures would be easier - very similar to the 2017 prompt on mythical creatures. What about extinct ones? There's a dodo bird in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland bu..."I'm fairly certain that cave bears are an extinct type of bear.
I think I will probably read Fantastic Beasts. I've never actually even read the first one yet, and Crimes of Grindelwald comes out in a week!
Since I plan to reread The Lord of the Rings I will probably go for the The Two Towers (wargs, ents, orcs etc.)
My first thought when seeing this prompt was "dinosaurs," so that's where my mind went. Here's some picks for that option:Raptor Red
The Dinosaur Lords
Dinosaur Summer
Cryptid Hunters
Anonymous Rex
Once again, dragons is an easy way for me to fill this prompt, since I have all these on my already owned TBR:Dragon's Future
Firebolt
Dragonlands Volume 1 - 3
The Prince Returns (keeper of dragons #1)
I can also recommend:
His Majesty's Dragon
The Last Dragonslayer
Poo-Poo and the Dragons
Also, for middle grade books, I know at least one of theAnimorphs books features dinosaurs. (Maybe one of the specials?)
Meg has a megalodon in it. This is the book that the movie is based on. I loved it. I think there are 6 books total in the series. I'll be reading #4 for this one!
I need to go hunt down the non fiction Dinosaur book I added to my TBR recently. That would be kind of cool, since my daughter is obsessed with dinosaurs. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World
My other thought is that my older daughter got this book ( her favorite from her school classroom) as a special gift last christmas - Beastworld: Terrifying Monsters and Mythical Beasts. It looks pretty cool, and would be a little break.
I’m going to reread Jurassic Park by Michael Creighton. I always liked the book better than the movie.
I’m thinking any Harry Potter would work as they are full of magical creatures. Also The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker.
I am going to read The Essex Serpent for this one. Was going to start it today, but guess I have to wait...
Both Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay work for this prompt!
The Extinction Trials was fun (it's pretty much The Hunger Games with dinosaurs) so I might read the sequel. I also have some non-fiction about de-extinction that could work, Bring Back the King: The New Science of De-extinction.I read a lot of fantasy so I might purposefully go with extinct rather than imaginary.
Jenny wrote: "I think I will probably read Fantastic Beasts. The book Fantastic Beasts is a mock up of the textbook from the books that was released to raise money for charity
Ruba wrote: "Does anyone know if STRANGE THE DREAMER fits this prompt?"I don't think that it does. There are some ~mystical~ creatures in the book, but none of them are imaginary (without being too spoilery, the moths that Sarai creates have magic, but they are moths). However, Strange the Dreamer would would for the multiple POV prompt, someone with a superpower, or a ghost story. I highly recommend it and its sequel!
I meant to read The Essex Serpent for 2018 but didn't get to it. Also these might fit:
The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock
The Mermaid's Sister

But the screenplays were published into books. Or Crimes of Grindelwald will be, when it comes out later this week!
I've read the little mock up textbook, years ago :)
I don't know how to hook links to books on the iPad, but At Waters Edge was good (LochNess monster). How about Court of Thorns and Roses? It has fairies right?
I didn't think I'd enjoy this prompt since I'm not a fan of imaginary creatures. But then I saw the extinct part, which ties in nicely with my goal to read more non-fiction and my interest in birds. I'll be choosing between Mark Avery's A Message From Martha, about the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon and Extinct Birds Of New Zealand.

Yep, I´d say it counts. Plenty imaginary creatures.
I think Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive One of History's Most Iconic Extinct Creatures would count
Not too sure about any extinct creatures but I do have a lot of books on my TBR which have magical creatures in them from mermaids to trolls to giant alien Gods to magical horse-like animals and much more:

Thank you.... I'll definitely read them...
Sara wrote: "Hmm...imaginary creatures would be easier - very similar to the 2017 prompt on mythical creatures. What about extinct ones? There's a dodo bird in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland bu..."Yes, the The Clan of the Cave Bear and the rest of the books in the series all have extinct creatures including Mammoths in the first book and I believe saber tooth tigers later in the series, plus the cave bears and cave lions. It's a good series, especially the first 3 books.
This list of books about prehistoric animals and mass extinctions is helpful for anyone looking to go the non-fiction route: Prehistoric Creatures.
Miriam wrote: "Vampire books fit into this category right?"I think so! I'll be reading Dracula by Bram Stoker.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban should fit this one. I am so determined to finally read this whole series!
Trina wrote: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban should fit this one. I am so determined to finally read this whole series!"I just read your review for Sorceror's Stone and I'm excited for you to continue with this series! SS was one of the first "real" chapter books I remember reading and I'm so happy to know they still hold up reading for the first time as an adult. The stories get more intricate and the writing more adult as Harry gets older, I'm sure you'll come to love the series!
Hmmm, what immediately jumped to mind for me was Jodi Taylor's books. She has a time travel series, The Chronicles of St Mary's, and at least 2 or 3 have dinosaurs or dodos. There's also The Nothing Girl which has an imaginary talking horse.
I would say that in the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski there a lot of imaginary creatures, eg. The Last Wish or Blood of Elves. There will also be a tv series based on the books on Netflix in 2019. Terry Pratchett's books would also be a good fit - dwarves, trolls and vampires. The Book of Lost Things also contains some of mythical creatures.
How to Train Your Dragon books should work here, as well as the author whose first and last names start with the same letter prompt
I'm not really a fantasy reader, and at first glance I don't think anything on my shelves will suit. But I have The Book of Speculation on my library TBR, and there be mermaids...
Does anyone know about this book... The Monsters of Templeton . I think it might work for this prompt.. I believe there is some sort of lake creature involved.. Ha! I have had it on my bookshelf for awhile, guess it's time to read it.
Tina wrote: "Does anyone know about this book... The Monsters of Templeton . I think it might work for this prompt.. I believe there is some sort of lake creature involved.. Ha! I have had it on ..."I read it a few years ago. I don't remember much about it, but I think it was good. I don't remember most books I've read, so that's not anything against the book.

What about the The Clan of the Cave Bear series? I expect there's a mammoth or some other extinct creature in those books. I've never read them.
