Trina Gloury (mactrin) | 76 comments I'm really trying to make my selections this year based on titles I already own, so will go with Ready Player One which has been one my shelf for a year now. I was actually supposed to read this for this years reading challenge but never got to it... oops haha

Maybe The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World., Eat, Pray, Love, or The Kindness Diaries: One Man's Quest to Ignite Goodwill and Transform Lives Around the World? All three of those would work for travel.

I'm not sure how well these books would TECHNICALLY fit the prompt, but Nevada Barr has an entire series about a National Park Ranger named Anna Pigeon - she moves between parks so she's always sort of exploring her new digs. Lots of out
door activities - hiking, etc. - included in the story.

Thats the hobby I'm using as well Mini :-)

I'm using a different book though. I have My Family and Other Animals down for ATY Mediterranean Country ( it was on my plan this year for Country Ive never been to, but that changed, like everything else in my plan this year)

I'm using it for that ATY prompt, too! :-) (I've some how managed to pair up every POP choice with an ATY prompt).

I saw LOL. I always try not to double dip but that never works out, so might be stealing your idea here.... although I think I'm actually going to BUY the book I have planned for this prompt.

I couldn't quite imagine reading 102 unique books so I set out to pair about a third to half of the prompts and well, got a little carried away :-D Not sure how likely I am to stick to my plan though.

What is your hobby book?

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 608 comments Mini wrote: "What is your hobby book?..."

Its here: Unseen City: The Majesty of Pigeons, the Discreet Charm of Snails & Other Wonders of the Urban Wilderness. I saw someone post about it in a thread for this years challenge and remembered it when I was thinking about what to use here. It was either reading ( another book about reading books LOL...I've done so many of those. Love them but...)
OR Hiking/Nature studies/Naturalist both for myself and with my daughters. I took naturalist course years ago but never finished and have been meaning to get back to it, so when I remembered this book I got all excited.

OOOOhhhhh....now I just found this one The Urban Bestiary: Encountering the Everyday Wild. Why does GR have to make picking challenge books so difficult??? I guess at least I have options ( something like 400+ of them ) 😂

I also have Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, which has been sitting on my shelf forever and I haven't gotten around to it.

Other books for the naturalist:
The Handbook of Nature Study ( HUGE book, we used for homeschooling)
Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature
any of the Burgess Books for children
The Burgess Bird Book for Children etc...
The Tracker
Ingwe

We have a bunch :-)

I was going to say that I love this book but that isn't right. I have a sick obsession like "not being able to look away from a train wreck" with this book. A reading hobby has a large part in it so it absolutely works.

Remarkable Creatures is a fantastic book about the original fossil hunters if you haven't read it already.

It's not an exact match, but the second book in the Jackaby series features a fossil dig: Beastly Bones.

Edited to add: You could read the first one for retelling of a classic or ghost story or book featuring an imaginary creature or debut novel.

Patrick Gale’s new book Take Nothing With You is about a boy learning to play the cello and I believe that a couple of readers have already put together Spotify lists of all the music mentioned in the book, so you can listen whilst you read.

Thegirlintheafternoon I think I'll go with Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves since reading is my main hobby - or maybe a hockey romance like Off the Ice or Skirting the Ice!

Hmmmm.... I tried to teach myself how to knit once. Everything I made just kept getting bigger and bigger with each row, and I thought dropping stitches was the biggest issue LOL. I hear crocheting is easier. I wonder if I threw out my yarn and needles, maybe I should try again and listen to some audiobooks.

I learned knitting first, and really took to it. My mother in law taught me. I learned to crochet later and just could not get the hang of it, even though everyone says it's easier. Maybe because I learned to knit first?

They're really just two different things--I'm not sure one is intrinsically easier. With knitting it's more clear where the stitches are and how many there are, but you also have to have more skill in order to do fancier stuff without messing it up. Crocheting it's easy to miss or add stitches when you're just starting out, but that also means it's easier to experiment without the whole thing falling apart.

I doubt it, because we are taught both at school, probably in first or second grade, and I think most people find knitting easier, at least if you actually have to make something. And many of the Olympic athletes knit, too... well, at least once in every four years.

I feel like sharing Arne and Carlos´ knitting books. I don´t knit, but you know, have a look at this christmas themed knitting book: 55 Christmas Balls to Knit: Colorful Festive Ornaments, Tree Decorations, Centerpieces, Wreaths, Window Dressings

Milena (milenas) | 1198 comments Great pictures! We used to have a knitting club at work, back when work was fun. We made a blanket out of squares like that for a colleague that was having a baby. Some people knit their squares and some crocheted. It was challenging putting it together.

message 146: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I can knit a scarf and that's about it. I tried crochet but I just kept getting in a mess. I still have all my stuff though, so one day I'll try again.
