Oh, great tip thank you. And there at the top of my to-read list is The Great Gatsby which I've been meaning to read for years so good excuse!

message 102: by Di (new)

Di I have always wanted to read 1984 so I will go with this one

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments Chinook wrote: "I read Eat, Pray, Love while I was getting divorced and as such I really liked it. There’s plenty to criticize, but as someone looking to make a big change about ending a marriage that also probably looked great on paper but did not make me happy and moving to Asia to work and live, a lot of it hit home with me at the time. I’ve no idea if I’d like it now - I’m a very different person now, married again but with kids, so if this ended in divorce, I’m sure I’d laugh in the face of travelling for a year to find myself after. "

Eat, Pray, Love will always be special to me as it gave me the courage I needed to make a major life change that was going to upset a lot of people, but that changed everything for the better for me. While my situation was not even remotely close to hers (nothing to do with a divorce), and I didn't get to travel the world to find myself, I still gained so much from reading this book. I doubt I will ever read it again, though, since I suspect it won't have a similar impact now.

Thanks for the suggestion to do this! One of my biggest goals next year is to read down my insanely long TBR--a combination of books I own plus those I have come across I want to read over the years. Adding the number of reviews is helpful--at least for this prompt. :)

message 107: by Verena (new)

Verena (verb1) 2019 might be the year I read Jane Eyre and/or The Great Gatsby :-)

message 108: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I believe about 70 books fit this prompt. I will use it as a reason to finally read The Book Thief

Brilliant! Too bad nothing on my To Read shelf has over a million ratings :("

Same with me!

I might do Eat, Pray, Love as I love that movie and have not read the book. Or I might do The Book Thief as I liked that move and am looking for a book over 500 pages to read in 2019 and this would count for that as well. I might do The Giver as it's on the Great American Read list, I have been thinking of reading it and a lot of my Goodreads friends gave it a good rating. Last on the list of possible books for this topic is Eragon. My boys liked it and own it, and it's more than 500 pages.

Jana Gantt (elorianelf) | 1 comments I think I will finally read Fahrenheit 451.

message 115: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debzanne) | 165 comments I hope I'm not messing someone up, but.... I just clicked on Cloud Atlas and it looks like it has 100k ratings, but not 1 million ratings... so it wouldn't count for this challenge.

message 116: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl (sarauscher) | 2 comments I think I am going to try The Lovely Bones.

Anyone else planning on doing this book for this prompt?

Well darn.

As we like to say in my book club : “it’s not the math club,” (after trying to split a bill five ways without a calculator).

Feeling my age, may be time for those bifocals!

Thank you for keeping me honest.

Looks like The Alchemist will be slotted into this and the AYT challenge...

message 118: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (stensten) | 14 comments Man, I have read 41 out of 66 on that listopia list, and the ones I haven't read I'm not super interested in, for the most part. I guess I'll be reading Jane Eyre or The Fellowship of the Ring.

message 119: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Blocher | 64 comments I'm going with The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Its been on TBR shelf for a long time.

Give this prompt until later in the year - Slaughterhouse might just make it. Handmaid's Tale had 954,000 in November, up to 990,500 now.

message 123: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 901 comments I've read 50/66 and a lot of them were low rated by me so this one scares me a bit. I've got it narrowed down to The Hobbit or The Alchemist. Any opinions on either?

message 124: by Juliebean (new)

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments @Sarah - I have The Alchemist penciled in for this year so I can’t speak on it. But I can speak on The Hobbit. It has slightly old fashioned speech but despite that, it is a story about a rather innocent and chubby young man who agrees to go on an adventure. It doesn’t have a lot of the complicated backstories that the rest of Tolkien’s books do. I loved it. (I loved LotR too but it has a different flavor, altogether.)

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments Sarah wrote: "I've read 50/66 and a lot of them were low rated by me so this one scares me a bit. I've got it narrowed down to The Hobbit or The Alchemist. Any opinions on either?"

Well, the Alchemist is a lot shorter, so there's that. :-)

In my personal opinion The Hobbit is the better book, but might also have a smaller niche in terms of readership that enjoys it. I'd say it's worth at least trying The Hobbit, especially if you enjoy classics or older/classic fantasy.

Handmaids needs only 3,058 more ratings to push it over the edge! That's only 13% of this full group!

I just looked at the list and I have read many of these. Good problem to have! I think I'll be looking at a Harry Potter or maybe Gone Girl. I think it might be fun to read Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Only 1,440 to go! Which is pretty amazing seeing as how Nadine just noted two days ago that it needed 3,058. At this rate, it might hit one million by the end of the week!

I've already read Handmaid's Tale and I've already read The Book Thief for this challenge, yet I am emotionally invested on watching the ratings count. It's now in at 1,357.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I have to give this book 5 stars. I have not seen the movie yet but this book has a perfectly executed twist to it. Would highly recommend!

message 149: by Teri (new)

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments Now I'm excited for The Handmaid's Tale to make the list. I've read the book so it won't really matter, but still it's fun to see. The Hulu series is obviously helping this book out.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 265 comments It's made it!

1,000,091 ratings

Its been on my TBR for a while, too. Maybe now's the time to read it.
