Thank you! I've been stuck on what book to read for this prompt and you have the right idea for sure. Read this book in high school and it was one of my favorites. Loved getting lost in this world when I should have been studying. Thank you for mentioning this!!

I agree. I'm going to read the Horse Whisperer because I read a lot about horses when I was a kid AND I saw the movie with a friend of mine who moved away about 10 years ago.

message 103: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Yeah - because I taught for ten years and now have two kids, children’s books tend to bring up more recent memories.

Usually I’m most nostalgic for places I’ve lived or visited, rather than my childhood books.

Like, I just reread all the Little House books so I could read Prairie Fire - but zero sense of nostalgia to rereading them. I’d read excerpts to my students, so that was more recent, but also it was hard to read them uncritically as an adult and I ended up really disliking Pa and generally finding them sad and disturbing rather than an adventure, which I think must have been how I took it as a child.

message 104: by Josie (new)

Josie Lacey | 82 comments Instead of re-reading a book, I might read Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading for this. It sounds like a nice way to reminisce about the books I read as a child without actually re-reading them.

message 105: by Amy J. (new)

Amy J. | 74 comments I might Reread It. It was my first truly adult book ( I read it when I was 12) and it started my obsession with Stephen King. During junior high and high school I read everything he had written up until that point (1998). I'm am not quite the constant and consistent reader of his work today, but I still dabble.

message 106: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Harflett | 16 comments I think for this prompt I will just wait until I read a book that makes me feel nostalgic. I don’t always know a book will until I am actually reading it. Depending on the story it could make me feel nostalgic about my childhood or about young love or about an amazing trip....I will wait until I feel it instead of trying to decide ahead of time what will make me feel it.

message 107: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 26 comments For me, it will be

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

message 108: by Sarah (last edited Dec 12, 2018 09:43AM) (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 901 comments I did an internship in Walt Disney World ten years ago so I might go with Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (who wouldn't want to live in the Magic Kingdom?).

My other options would be something theatre-y because I was very much into dance and drama as a kid or something about backpackers to remind me of when I was travelling through Australia and New Zealand, but I've already read all of the obvious ones for both of these so it'll be harder

message 109: by Monica (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 7 comments I am planning to read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This was one of the first books I remember reading growing up and I loved it. When the movie came out I loved it even more. It just makes me think of simpler times.

I think that’s the one for me too, I read it as a teenager and cried and cried. Love that book

Good call Victoria! The hardest part will be waiting until 2019 to read it!"

Bought this for my husband for his birthday. He's done with it. I am planning on reading it and one of Barack Obama's books for the "two books with a common theme".... the theme being "Obama" authors. Fortunately, I have several other books to read as I wait for 2019.

message 112: by Berna (last edited Dec 13, 2018 11:08PM) (new)

Berna We used to have graphic novels of classics in my house. As a kid, I read them many times. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas was one of my favorites but I never read the novel although I saw many movie versions.
It was on my TBR and I decided to read it for this challenge because thinking about those graphic novels makes me really nostalgic.

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

Will be lovely to read a childhood favourite again.

I keep hearing such good things and can't wait to read Becoming! When I found out Michelle narrated, I decided to go with the audiobook which I rarely do and am on a long wait list through my library.

Great idea about connecting this with an Obama rec. I am going with one of his for the "book recommended by celebrity you admire" prompt. I love how eclectic his book tastes are.

Jess (seejessread) | 248 comments I think I am going to read My Name Is Memory I think. It's by the same author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants which I loved in adolescence.

message 120: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (daswolli) | 15 comments I'll re-read (at least) the first volume of the Mark Brandis: Weltraumpartisanen series by Nikolai von Michalewsky (written under the pen name Mark Brandis, also the name of the main protagonist). Bordbuch Delta VII It's a YA space opera series, which was published from 1970 to 1987.
I read all 31 volumes of it during my school years in the 80ies, borrowed from a public library. I had a checklist with all volumes, and it took a lot of stalking to get my hands on the volumes that were still missing from it as soon as they were returned to the library.
Apparently my now best friend did exactly the same, in the same library. ::laughs:: So, yeah, it's quite huge on the nostalgia factor for me.

A Wrinkle in Time is on my list too! I can't decide between that and aTrixie Belden book. Both were favorites of mine when I was a kid.

message 122: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments I plan on reading Winnie-the-Pooh, too. I preferred the comics to Donald Duck when I was a child but I never read any books. Now I happen to have one in English, so that's what I am thinking. Either that or Sherlock Holmes...

That's a great idea! I love the Harry Potter Series. My little sister and I are rereading it. I haven't read this book either so I'm excited to. It came out when I was in college and alas never got to it.

YESSS. Thank you, that's brilliant. This book made me fall in love with reading. Now I can't wait.

message 128: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (badfalcon) I spent a lot of my teens reading Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Anne Rice so I'm thinking one of their books. I've got a King ('Salems Lot) and Koontz (Sole Survivor) on my TBR pile so it works well for helping clear the pile as well

Madhurima | 2 comments I think this prompt is a great way to start my reading challenge! I'm going to go with The Catcher in the Rye. I can't wait to re-read this!

Happy 2019, everyone!

Shereen (reenie524) I decided to pick a book about a topic that makes me nostalgic, that works too right?

message 131: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Hohmann | 8 comments Thinking about reading The Indian in the Cupboard with my daughter. This was the first school assigned book I remember absolutely loving. Or I might just pick up something by Judy Blume or R. L. Stine. We'll see!

message 132: by Di (new)

Di Little House on the Prairie all the way for me, can't wait to get lost in it.

Gareth Egerton (gegerton) | 4 comments I'm so tempted to just check a big stack of Asterix the Gaul books out of the library for this one.

message 134: by Hectaizani (new)

Hectaizani I grew up in New York City, and some of my happiest memories are of visiting the Museum of Natural History and just spending time wandering around and looking at all of the stuff. So I'm going to read a book about the history of natural history museums.

Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads: The Culture and Evolution of Natural History Museums or
Dry Storeroom No. 1

Makes sense to me!

message 139: by GoyangiLoves2Read (new)

GoyangiLoves2Read (jour_maria) | 1 comments I think this will be my first prompt. The book I was thinking about was Redwall by Brian Jacques. I was also thinking about Harry Potter or the Chronicles of Narnia. These were all books that I’ve read as a kid and they bring back such fond memories of a simpler time.

message 140: by Marianne (new)

Marianne | 1 comments My favorite author from my childhood was Judy Blume. I feel that’s only right that I choose one of her books for this challenge. I’m thinking of picking one of the books she wrote for adults, but I’m not sure which one! In the Unlikely Event, or Summer Sisters, or Wifey maybe? Idk which to pick! Lol!

I LOVED those books! Should have known then that I'd be a historical fiction nerd. I started rereading Harry Potter this year, and next is Prisoner of Azkaban, which was a favorite of mine, so I think I'm going to go with that for this one.

Lacey (bookishlace) (laceyannea) | 8 comments The obvious choice for me here would be one of the Harry Potter books, but I'm going to be doing Lemony Snicket instead as I just recently ordered the first 4 books in A Series of Unfortunate Events to add to my collection!

message 148: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 111 comments So today I read Trixie Belden and the Red Trailer Mystery. I remember Trixie and the gang being good friends of mine when I was a kid. I would read a d re-read the books. Glad I’ve read this one again but I don’t need to do that again.

message 149: by Darci (new)
