Now we'll never know

Boy hears a bell at the beginning of the book. Mythical creatures are with him? Title possibly starts with "W" and is a made up word. Read in middle school.

Hadlie, I added plot details to the topic header. Feel free to update it using the small "edit" link after the header - on the full desktop website, not the mobile app.
What's the significance of the bell? What kind of bell is making the sound? (Spoilers are okay - just give us a clear warning before revealing a spoiler.)
What's the basic plot or tone - mystery, adventure, quest, battle, good vs. evil, coming of age, funny at times, dark, etc.?

I read this one myself, about 5 or more years ago, also in middle school for Battle of the Books, and although I remember liking it, I remember barely anything about the book, itself, other than some sort of magic-esque feature. However, I was just looking at the available preview, and right there at the beginning, there is a bell sound. I have no idea whether it is significant to the plot, or whether they are heard again at the end. Also, there is no "W", or any magical creatures that I can recall - just some sort of element of magic (maybe magical Powers?). Even so, based on the coincidental timing, the age group, and the bells, I figured I might as well mention it.
