From what I can remember is starts with a boy going to visit his ailing grandfather with his mother. While visiting he finds a door I think and time travels too the 1930's or 40's and meets a teen boy and girl and befriends them. While living in the past him and the teen boy both develop feeling for the girl. The teen boys then join the service to fight in World War 2 and are sent the the pacific to fight the Japanese. While fighting the time traveler boy is left by his friend to be overrun by Japanese soldiers and he holds them off until he is wounded by a thrown grenade. He loses an eye and later found and brought to a hospital. When he does make it back to the U.S. he finds out that the friend who abandoned him married the girl they both liked. You later find out that the girl he liked and the friend who left him behind are actually his grandparents and also the reason his grandfather hates him.
Any help finding this book is appreciated.
