Me, too. I thought maybe the shows made Sherlock seem a little wilder than he was but after reading this book I'm thinking not! Apparently his character really did do a lot of drugs. Somehow I find that shocking!!

Yes. I've only seen the tv shows. And the eccentricity is clear in both. I think i may have seen a play of Hound of the Baskervilles ...but it left less of an impression!
In high school, I was gifted with a two volume set of “The Complete Sherlock Holmes” and have read all of them, some multiple times. The PBS “Sherlock” with Cumberbatch is an all-time favorite show of mine as well.
I have not read them but I have a book with a bunch of the stories in my shelf of books I someday want too read :)
I have read a few Holmes stories. I've watched many of the old Basil Rathbone movies, and I love the Benedict Cumberbatch series. I have also seen the Mr. Holmes movie, although I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought i would.
My familiarity is what I've heard over the years and the Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law film versions. I can't say that I have ever been drawn to the character. However....I think I MUST check out Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes. Yes, I will definitely be doing that.
I have never read the original Sherlock Holmes but after reading this book, I am going to try several of the stories. There were enough hints of the quirky personalities to peek my interest.
I haven't read the Sherlock books, but watched the TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch a few years back and LOVED them. That is why I am excited to read this book :)
I loved the actual Sherlock Holmes stories! We read them in high school and I re-read them often. The movies did it no justice and I know I should watch the new show but I can't bring myself to have it all possibly ruined again.
I don’t think I’ve ever read Sherlock Holmes but have seen the movie with Robert Downey Jr and the show with Cumberbatch. Enjoyed both even though they are a bit hard to follow. There have been plenty of studies that show super smart people dabble in drugs and I think Sherlock is a perfect example of this. I really enjoyed the book showcasing the family and the addiction issue may come to play in later books.
I haven’t seen any of the shows or movies, but I read Hound it the Baskervilles and enjoyed it. I didn’t glean much of the personalities of the main characters from that book, however.
I don't believe I've read the original stories.I've seen both the miniseries with Cumberbatch and also the tv series Elementary with Johnny Lee Miller.
I feel like much of my familiarity comes from Great Mouse Detective. LOL!!!

Have you seen any of the Sherlock Holmes television shows or movies? My husband and I just finished "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch and it was soooooo good! We also just watched the movie "Mr. Holmes" with Ian McKellen as 93-year old Sherlock over the weekend. I'd love to chat about these with anyone who's seen them!
