The cover of the book had a picture of playing cards I believe. The main character receives different playing cards with details on a location or person. The main character scouts out each place and then intervenes to make life better for whoever is there. After finishing a card, he mysteriously receives another card with the next task at hand. I'm unable to remember character names. It was set in current day.

I read this book when I was in high school, around 2007-2010. I believe it was a popular (maybe awarded) book. I thought it was relatively new when I read it, so most likely published after 2000.
