I read this book back in 2009-2010 (for my 10th grade English class) and unfortunately I can’t remember much detail. It starts off with a chain gang singing on the road and it’s based in the south. I think it’s based in the 40s-60s
There’s 3-4 main characters, one which I remember vaguely has mental health issues.

I remember more the author as someone who wrote her stories based on her life. She was very dysfunctional and wrote all these crazy stories. I think her last name might be McCollough but it’s not Colleen McCoullough. This book was made into a movie

Carson McCullers? I read Member of the Wedding but she wrote some other books, she was southern and a little nuts.
