Bobbyc | 3 comments HI.

I read this book about 10 years ago. My instinct tells me it is not much older, but I can be way off.

I remember a building that maybe little people went to, I am thinking troll accountant types, they went to work there. But there were secret passages into another world. A whole new story took place in that world. I am thinking someone got lost in it.

DRIVING ME CRAZY. Helppppp

What age range was the book for? What genre was it? Any memory of the cover?

Bobbyc | 3 comments Thanks for your interest.

Don't remember the cover whatsoever.

I am thinking genre is Fantasy of sorts. (I'm not a big fantasy reader so have no reference or comparison.) Not GoT type fantasy, nor D&D from what I know of them).

Written for adults. Thick from what I recall - 250- 300 pages.

Sorry to bring in the world of my frustration!.. ha

Michele | 2488 comments Hm. Do you recall if the building and the little people featured largely in the story, or were they just at the beginning, as a way of getting to this other world? Do you remember anything at all about this other world -- was it scary, happy, friendly? Medieval, stone age? Magical in some way? Do you recall anything at all, even something really tiny, about the main character(s)?

Bobbyc | 3 comments Thanks, Michelle, for your interest.

From my current (not necessarily accurate) perception, they Building and the little people ran through-out. The setting was modern outside the building, but beyond the magic doors things got, well, fantastical. Nothing trippy or other-worldly, just a bit fuzzyl ha.

I remember someone was stuck there. I think it was a female Protagonist. I THINK there were only certain times to come and go and she might have got lost deeper in the world.

That is about all i have. .. THNKS

caracal-eyes | 134 comments Sounds a little like The Portable Door. But of course that was my first thought, since I read it recently.
However, it does match on several points:
-Pretty thick (416 pages in paperback)
-Written for adult audience
-Main character is male, but his female coworker/love interest is a pretty central character
-The building they work in is (view spoiler).
-Magic (portable) door (as per the title).
-Modern setting otherwise
-Published 2003

Actually a closer match than I first expected. Still doesn't seem quite right to me though, but maybe...

Bobbyc, are you still looking for this or did you find it? Was it "The Portable Door"?

Aerulan | 1317 comments Long shot and possibly unlikely but just throwing it out there anyway.
The Gnomewrench in the Dwarfworks &
The Gnomewrench in the Peopleworks has a similar sort of feel to what's described, the second book moreso than the first.
