I'll also now go back to my earlier comment about the long sequence where one of the Russian subs has a reactor core melt-down and sinks. This was totally unrelated to anything else in the story. Was it there to show that the Russians can't build good subs? Was it there to suggest the inherent danger in running nuclear reactors on subs in the first place? It was detailed and tense and an interesting story, but a complete tangent, it seems.

I agree - this is one of those rare times when the movie was better than the book.
