Freebie: Book 1 in the Matchmaking For Wallflowers Series: How to Capture a Duke
280 reviews: 36% 5-stars & 35% 4-stars
Caution: ratings are mixed, modern sensibilities and at times stupid actions by the H/h and slammed as not Regency as it ignored propriety and rules of the day/era. Buyer beware.

Just read about this on FB. The first book, Intertwine, in a series called House of Oak by Nichole Van is currently free. The remaining four are all on Kindle countdown. It's a Regency/modern timeslip premise from what I can tell and seems to be fairly highly rated.

I recently read a short Angela Thirkell novel, The Demon in the House. Every time I read an Angela Thirkell novel I am reminded how similar her social comedy is to Austen's and Heyer's, delivered through self-revealing dialogue. They were contemporaries (Heyer and Thirkell, I mean), and I wonder if they thought of each other as competitors. Anyone in this group who hasn't read Thirkell might want to give her a try. The first novel in the series is High Rising. Delightful books!

Thanks for the tip-off, Jeanne. I quite enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy.

Thanks for that, Jeanne. Although, the heroine of the first book is called Darcy - not sure if my brain will be able to cope with that!

I had several Rancho Valle books on my Amazon wishlist and noticed that they had been pulled. I suppose this sale is the reason. This looks cute.

Update: imagine this. I just received an email from Amazon stating that my purchase of this book earned me $0.75 in e-book credit [toward my next purchase]. This offer expires on June 20, 2019. Just saying.
Downsizing, Jeanne? Phew! I have to do that too, even though we're adding onto my house. I plan to listen to that book at some point, even though I don't think her method is my style. I've found the website/blog/past "A Slob Comes Clean" and have now listened to over 100 of her half-hour podcasts over the last two weeks. (And have not read a single page of a book.) Her method - combined with what I already used/learned from the Fly Lady years earlier - is more my style. It hurts to let go of toys, though. My youngest is in kindergarten, and toddler/preschool toys are my FAVORITE! We have so much, though. Eep! My oldest son is 15, and I figure I don't want to get rid of all of it, because I might be a grandma in ten years or so!
It is hard, Marlene. Not all systems work for everyone. I just found her interesting. I have incorporated a few of her methods, but I haven't made the progress that I had wanted.
I think that overall, her method sounds like it's pretty good. When things settle around here, I totally want to follow her order of decluttering with clothing first and sentimental items last. It makes total sense. But her idea of talking to her things doesn't mesh well with me, especially since it's rooted in her religion. Not that I'm concerned that God would be displeased with me for "talking" to my objects. But I know that I just cannot handle the overhaul that proponents of the KonMari method seem to favor. It's just literally impossible. We have too many kids and too much stuff to make that even possible. :-) I just have to commit to doing a certain amount each day.
I've adopted some of her folding methods.
I've not been reading for between 2-3 weeks. But I did just complete a review!!!!! From a book I read in December. Eep! It's a (non-JAFF) novellla collection by Michelle Griep, a favorite author of mine. The first story is set in Regency England, though not in the way you'd expect! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I think her style also appeals to those who enjoy a minimalistic lifestyle. Hoarders will have a hard time with her system. I understand the talking to clothes/articles gets to some but... I like to think of having an appreciation of the article in question. I might think... I enjoyed wearing that or my hubby really liked that color on me... when I wore it I felt amazing... I certainly enjoyed that.
I think the purpose was to acknowledge the article had served its purpose and that helped in the 'letting it go' process.

A compilation of essays from the English Historical Fiction Authors blog, this book provides a wealth of historical information from Roman Britain to early twentieth century England. Over fifty different authors share hundreds of real life stories and tantalizing tidbits discovered while doing research for their own historical novels.
Thanks for letting us know about that, Leslie. I love diving in and out of books like that. I'm currently enjoying one that I found by accident when I went down a research rabbit hole during a beta read last year. It's called Medieval Underpants and Other Blunders: A Writer's (and Editor's) Guide to Keeping Historical Fiction Free of Common Anachronisms, Errors, and Myths by Susanne Alleyn. It's not on sale or anything but it's not an unreasonable price here in the UK and it's quite a lot of fun as well as factually interesting.
Anji, that sounds fascinating. I may have to read that. I saw it a long time ago and then forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.

I finished out my Heidi Ashworth Miss Delacourt books:
Miss Delacourt Has Her Day
Lady Crenshaw's Christmas
Lord Haversham Takes Command
As a series I gave it 4.5 **** It's madcap Regency, and in every story there is something happening without relent every time the characters turn around. It's funny, groan-worthy, frustrating. Like Lucy and Ethyl. Whoever the main character for each book is at the time, it's a constant 'What A Day I'm Having.' But there are endearing sweet moments worth the drama.

I hesitated in posting this because the reviews slammed the lack of proper editing [read like it was a rough draft], and it was interesting but predictable. I guess it is a buyer beware type of purchase even if it was free.
