Yes, Harriet Walter was great, but so was Claire Skinner in the 2008 series, now I come to think of it. :)

I'll be reading it again soon, and I've also just ordered the 1981 version. Nothing like a good old Jane Austen-athon.

It came across as humorous at that point, but in a way I think that was 'off' because she had been SO vile to the Dashwood females that there really is nothing funny whatsoever about her actions.As a character, she really doesn't seem to have any redeeming features at all.
Re the 2008 version - I must refresh my memory on You Tube!
Watching the new Emma film now... nothing says Ye Olde England like folk music and bare bums does it. Yikes,
Every time I start thinking its not too bad they do something that makes me cringe. I feel like there's a good film in there somewhere but...
I have been following the discussions of you all: brave enough or curious enough to watch this ... ahem... attempt and I decidedto avoid it like the plague. :)
Nope I spoke too soon, oh well. It's not the worst Jane Austen adaptation but I think it might be the worst Emma.
It certainly makes some odd choices, but I thought the dialogue hewed very closely to the text and that's something!
The bare bums scene comes from a satirical print and possibly other some primary source material. The music is said to be period correct but I wasn't crazy about it. I enjoyed the movie more than the most of the Emma adaptations I've seen so far. If you took the gorgeousness of the BBC 2009 and a script using Jane Austen's original text, you would have the perfect adaptation but alas, most of the screenwriters chose to toss out Jane's words. After watching the dreadful Sanditon, I had super low expectations for this version of Emma so I think that's why I liked it more than most people.
@Melindam I'd still recommend watching it, if you have a version you like this is just an extra oneI agree that the dialogue was good for the most part, as I said there were times when I didn't think it was that bad.
The folk songs were no doubt around in that era but they felt out of place played over the scenes they were in.
I really didn't dislike it that much but I can't say I want to watch it again either.
