As I mentioned in my mountain topic, every year I plan to read only from my own stacks in an effort to get my owned TBR piles under control. And every year I get distracted by library books that I've always wanted to read or a book that a friend tells me is fantastic. So--I'm going to reward myself with a mountain climb and hope that I don't get too distracted from Mount Everest over in the Mount TBR Challenge...

Please take a moment to introduce yourself to the group.

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 39 comments Who doesn't get distracted from TBR books spilling from your shelves by books you'll always wanted but never could get before or that one that's becoming a movie and people are crazy over it and you want to check out before it comes out? I know I do, so I'm obviously joining this! I'm hoping to not get as distracted from the original TBR challenge, because now I'll have more control over these kind of books, so it's a win-win: I get to read books that I want to, but are not elligible for the TBR challenge and still manage to not get too off-track for it!

message 3: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 79 comments I do try tackling and reading my many (nearly 1,000) owned books but I do struggle with other books I do not own that look like great reading. I work at an academic library and get a generous due date. This means the books I have checked out tend to pile up as well. (Current count is 60. Yikes!) I would like to get this down to a more manageable number. This new challenge is perfect for that task!

Thanks Bev for creating the Virtual Mount TBR challenge!

message 4: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (dgrachel) | 1 comments I LOVE this idea! My TBR list, thanks in large part to Litsy, is ridiculous. I'm excited to be able to utilize my library and still have them apply to a challenge I'll be doing both of these Mount TBR challenges next year. Now, I just have to decide which peaks are realistic goals. Thanks for doing this, Bev!!

message 5: by Jenn (new)

Jenn M (bookwormextraordanaire) | 2 comments I'm in, too. The librarians in my small hometown library all know me and are ALWAYS suggesting new reads for me. It's ALWAYS distracting to go in there, but hey, love one book, love them all. I, too, like Sunita, have a LONG wishlist on my library Overdrive account, so working to whittle that down...maybe a little? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us to have success in 2019! I am trying to read the 100 books from the Great American Read (PBS) in 2019--some of them owned by me (so Bev's Mount TBR) and some from my library (I'll count here). Love this idea, Bev.

message 6: by Méliane (new)

Méliane (meliane) | 6 comments I don't buy many books so most of TBR fits this challenge. Some of them have been on the pile for over 5 years. Yikes. I know that I can complete Mount Olympus with library books but to make it more challenging I'll set a rule that 2/3 of the books I count for it need to be added before 2018 (also no books added before 2019). As of today 42% of the books I read this year were added before 2018 vs 69% of the books on my TBR.

message 7: by Daria (new)

Daria Zeoli (dariazeoli) This is great! I’ve read close to 190 books in 2018 and only 35 off of Mount TBR so far. A virtual Mount to climb is going to be so positive for my reading self-esteem!

message 8: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (cseydel) | 19 comments Thanks for starting this! I don't buy a lot of books, but I always have a giant stack checked out from the library, more than I can read during the loan period. It will be fun to be able to "count" these.

message 9: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I like this idea! And I love the mountain names!

I have series that I read, but only get them from the library. It's nice to know they'll have a place to reside. :) And, like other said, my library wish list is out of control. I'm only aiming for Rum Doodle because I do need to concentrate on my owned books, but will probably aim for a higher climb at some point.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone, I'm Sara :) I used to be an avid reader and book blogger but then got burned out a few years ago and went from reading over 100 books a year, to less than 5 (ouch!). Last week my 10 year old son challenged me to see which of us could read 5,000 pages first, so I'm getting back into things and have already read two books :)

I only read library books, because I'm cheap LOL, so this challenge is perfect for me. I don't really have a current TBR list so I'll be putting one together here shortly!

Welcome! Please know that you don't have to have a TBR list all sorted out. You can add to this list as you go. :-)

message 12: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 2 comments Hello All!

My TBR on GR is officially over 800 and I'm going to dedicate my 2019 to trying to whittle it down to a more reasonable size. I've already spent a few hours organizing my audio book hold list, my e-book hold list, and physical book hold list for my library so that as soon as I finish a book, I can just move on to the next one.

I regularly participate in two different book clubs in the outside world, so my reading tends to be focused towards just those books, but my TBR is massive so my plan is to work it down.

I'll try to post regular monthly updates on my blog, which can be found here: The Aries Atlas

Susan | 38 comments As I’ve sorted through my stacks of books this year, I’ve found some borrowed books I’d forgotten all about :(. This seems like the perfect way to get them read and returned to my patient friends. Mt Rum Doodle looks just the right height for the job.

message 21: by Rachel (new)

Rachel This is such a great challenge! I can’t wait to get some of my books off my list that have been there for years. I mean to read them and then I get distracted for some reason or another. I already have my first couple lined up to start. I want to whittle down my TBR list and all the kindle books and audios I have stacked up. Happy Reading!!!

message 23: by Abi (new)

Abi (booksa144) Hi, I'm Abi, and I can't wait to do this challenge! I did Mount TBR this last year, and most of my books I read last year weren't books i owned, so I can hopefully make more progress with this challenge. Nice to meet you all!

message 24: by Tari (new)

Tari (thann) I almost forgot to jump in here and say hi to everyone, I kinda made my climb post first. I just joined the challenge this year and am hoping to make a little dent in the ole mountain!

message 25: by Tari (new)

Tari (thann) PS: I'm also in the physical book Mount TBR Challenge, hoping to pick away at that too

Hi, Abi and Tari! So glad you're climbing the virtual mountains with me.

message 27: by E (new)

E (ewillse) | 22 comments Bev, thank you SO much for hosting this challenge!
It's perfect!
I'm a librarian, and even before I started working as a librarian full time, my Good Reads TBR numbered in the hundreds.
And it gets worse, every time I go to a "New Books" presentation, or a conference, or even empty the book drop at work. Whee!

So a challenge of library books is just what I need. I'm also doing the conventional Mount TBR because I really need to get my owned books under control too.
Pleased to meet everyone!
And have fun with your local libraries!
- E

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Thanks for creating this awesome challenge!!!! Although I did manage to successfully climb Mt Olympus in the 2018 Mt TBR challenge, I got a little distracted with books I didn't own from time to time and couldn't count. Now I have a win-win option.

I have a private group of my own here on GR where I track my own personal lists of books so between this Virtual climb and the Mt TBR climb I should be able to whittle away at all these random TBR lists and stacks.

I LOVE going to the library and find myself snooping around there for hours and hours. I ALWAYS find something that has been on my TBR/radar for years that I must bring home.

Although I love challenges, I had to give them up. I would sign up for all of them LOL It got to be very time consuming trying to update and find books to meet the very specific criteria. It's nice to have these 2 challenges to feed my need for a challenge while working on tbr lists, random book pick ups, AND owned books!!!

Thanks again Bev for being an awesome Host!!!Good luck to everyone!!!

So, glad you found us. I just knew that I needed to make this one after I kept getting questions about library books, etc for Mount TBR. Especially since all of the library challenges that I used to do seem to have disappeared.

Jadetyger Sevea Hiya, folks!

I'm participating in both TBR challenges this year. Thanks, Bev, for creating this one! I admit that I feel guilty when I read a borrowed book over one on my TBR pile. Quick question: Do books borrowed from friends, or listened to on Spotify or other services count?

Any book that you do not own and cannot keep counts.

I'm Sheila, also known as The Quiet Geordie.

I'll be participating in both challenges this year.

Hope to see some of you on the trip!

message 35: by Marni (new)

Marni (marnitanya) | 9 comments I have SO MANY books on my to-read list. I'm doing the Mount TBR challenge as well, but there are so many books that have been on my list forever, but I don't actually own, figured I could do both this year.

message 36: by angeline (new)

angeline (angereads_) Hi everyone! I was originally doing the just the Mount TBR challenge, but seeing as I can't get enough of library books and my virtual TBR just keeps growing, I thought why not do both?

For this challenge, I'm hoping to reach Mount Crumpit (24 books)! :)

message 38: by Denise (new)

Denise (dunnica_harps) My TBR has always been a mix of books I own and books I want to find, so I will be doing a double climb. My goals are modest, though, since I average 2-3 books a month. Even though the rules don't have a cut off date, I'm going to try to concentrate on books that I shelved prior to Jan 1st. This is my first time participating in both challenges, though I did a personal combo challenge last year. 😊
