Jamie O'Leary (goodreadscomjamie_oleary) | 110 comments - What are you reading for this category?

I read Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. This won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2009, and I have to say, I am very proud of myself for continuing to plug away and read until the very end. I did not care for this book at all. I really struggled to get through. I did like the titular character Olive, which was later portrayed by Frances McDormand in an HBO series of the same name. But all throughout, I kept thinking, what am I missing? I just could not get into it. Did anyone else feel this way with this book? Just curious!

Kathryn | 563 comments What are you reading for this category?
I chose Cop Town by Karin Slaughter.

Which award did you choose? Is it a winner or nominee?
It was the winner of the Ian Fleming Steel category of the CWA Daggers Awards in 2015.

Which genre?
Crime

It was a very gritty crime novel, with a lot of bad language and a lot of sexual harrassment. I'm not sure I can say that I actually enjoyed it, but it was an eye-opening look at what I assume was how the Atlanta Police Department operated in the 1970s and what life was like for women at the time in that kind of Old Boys' environment.

Yes, Jamie! I read this almost 2 years ago, and in my review, I described it as "dismal, dreary, drab, depressing"!! I can't say I'm too keen to read much else by Elizabeth Strout, I have to say!

Marilyn (goodreadscommarilyn_zembo_day) | 60 comments - What are you reading for this category?
*EDUCATED by Tara Westover

- Which award did you choose?
*Started out with Goodreads Choice Awards. But found out it also has won or been nominated for several other awards (see GR page re EDUCATED to view the list!).

- Is it a winner or nominee?
*Winner of a GR Choice Award 2018. Above-mentioned list of other nominations/awards notes 7 of them!

- Which genre?
*Memoir & Autobiography! I love a good memoir and, halfway through it, I'm convinced it will rank among the best I've read, at least in recent years!

P.S. dated 4/17/19:
Finished reading EDUCATED yesterday afternoon. I wrote the following on my Read It Forward and Bookworms United FB group sites: "Especially want to thank all the readers here on FB who positively raved about this book. It was a major factor in my making sure I bought and read it!" Certainly this would also apply to my Goodreads Around the Year in 52 Books group readers too!

I rated EDUCATED by Tara Westover: 5-stars here on GR. Wrote a review too. Cannot say enough good things about it. Compelling, excellent writing, and yet frightening re some aspects. A must-read.

What I wrote:
Please click on the link to my review of the latest book I've read, a memoir titled EDUCATED by Tara Westover. I did not want to put it down. Her story is mesmerizing, frightening, and inspiring. And a recipient of several nominations and wins of book awards. Luckily, the latter also met Challenge #1 on my Around the Year in 52 Books group 2019, "A book that was nominated or won an award in a genre you enjoy." That genre would obviously be memoir/autobiography/biography, with memoir being my particular favorite.
