Poll #14 - Polarizing

Since this was one of the most chosen prompts on the 2019 Rejects tab on the community spreadsheet, I thought I would start a thread for it to help people crowdsource podcasts, videos, or blogs that they would recommend looking at for inspiration!

I don't listen to many podcasts or watch vlogs, but my favorite blog is Jamie at The Perpetual Page-Turner. She reads a lot of YA, if that's your style, but she also reviews some adult fiction, and she was my inspiration for reading personal development books this year!

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I love Books and LaLa on YouTube. Thats where I got my suggestion from. Also, the same book was recommended by one of my favorite reviewers here ( she makes me laugh so hard!) I don't read her blog, but it can be found here:

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments Emily - Jamie the Perpetual Page Turner also has a "What are you reading?" thread on the GR Group Seasonal Reading Challenge. I knew I recognized that name!

I listened to my first podcast on book recommendations today! It's called What Should I Read Next by Anne Bogle, author of I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life. Here's the link to the Show Notes.

I thought it was great and I picked up several books to add to my TBR! I listened to episode 152, in which they were talking mostly about Canadian Lit. Here are some of the book recommendations, (which could also help with other prompts).

Canadian-related:
Indigenous: Monkey Beach, The Lesser Blessed (YA)
Settlers of the Marsh by Frederick Philip Grove
Nothing Like Love by Sabrina Ramnanan (set on Trinidad & Tobago)
The Cartographer of No Man's Land by P.S. Duffy (WWI, nominee for the *Dayton Literary Peace Prize)
The Boat People by Sharon Bala
The Lola Quartet by Emily St. John Mandel

Not Canadian-related:
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch (fantasy w/ several awards)
The Measure of My Powers: A Memoir of Food, Misery and Paris by Jackie Kai Ellis (memoir, food-related)

*Side Note: The Dayton Literary Peace Prize is the first and only annual U.S. literary award recognizing the power of the written word to promote peace. This might be another interesting prize to follow and read!

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments The Podcast Overdue has an episode on just about every classic plus more recent books (including sci-fi), than you can imagine! LOTS of books from the Great American Reads list.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments Also, I just set up a shelf for Podcast Recommendations on my GR page. Feel free to browse it! There's not much on it yet but I'm sure it will grow exponentially, if I keep listening!

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I was a few BookTubers:
- Elizabeth at Booksandpieces (mostly SFF): https://www.youtube.com/user/booksand...
- Jean of Jean Bookisthoughts (ancient classics, feminist literature, but also a bit of everything): https://www.youtube.com/user/BookishT...
- Saane of Books and Quills (a bit of everything): https://www.youtube.com/user/booksand...

Saane recently made a video full of recommendations for books about books, reading, libraries and bookstores: https://youtu.be/L0YyGucKkGg

Rachelnyc | 943 comments It's a potential reject prompt of its own but for anyone not doing it, you can use something from The Millions here https://themillions.com/2018/07/great...

I also love https://www.theparisreview.org/fiction

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments Another podcast I like is LeVar Burton Reads, in which he reads one piece of short fiction. From listening to it, I’ve found several short story collections that I’m interested in. He tells you the collection where you can find the story.
