Apocalyptic tribe keeps treasure in box - American flag

An apocalyptic book from the 50’s or 60’s where a father and son wander around in a land that was destroyed by war a long time before. They wander until they find a tribe of people that have a precious treasure in a box. At the end of the book it is discovered that the prized treasure in the box is an American flag.
