Do you follow the Hype?

Definetly agree about following tried and true authors instead of the hype! Also, I never heard of Murakami, I will look into his work!

One exception was the Harry Potter series which I bought as they came out.

Does anyone have a book that they read due to it being so "hyped up" but were then left extremely disappointed? Have you ever followed the hype and was left surprisingly impressed?
For me, a book that left me pleasantly surprised was "The Fault in our Stars" by John Green. I remember I hadn't read anything by him yet and I had just started watching Vlogbrothers on YouTube and I really enjoyed it. I remember thinking that the plot sounded too sad but I decided to give it a go anyway, and by the end of the first page I was hooked and I finished the book in three days (which for me, is FAST lol) and I now consider it one of my all-time favourite books.
A book that left me recently quite disappointed was "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying" by Marie Kondo. To be fair, I did have very high expectations for this book - I just wanted it to flick a switch in my brain and turn me into a super-flawlessly-tidy-organised-superhuman... but alas, it did not. Even though I will admit that I have picked up a few tips from the book, I do feel it was over-hyped and still see it as a waste of my money and time.

The Pisces I thought this book was going to be weirdly fantastic because of the hype behind it... MEH. It was weird so that category fit, but it was not so much fantastic.

I will usually try to stay away from it, but I must admit the curiosity does get the best of me sometimes! Otherwise, I will read the book in my own time, and that's when I will be either like "oooh I get it now" or "really???"
