ABANDONED. SciFi Fantasy settlers crash land on a planet with alien dragons

The sun is so hot it melts the surface of the planet and everyone adapts to live underground. Iron is rare and sought after. Main character is a boy living alone because everyone else in his group died. He has a sword with all their names etched into it. Some kid gets attacked near his hideout and gets inside and turns out he stole a 'dragon' egg from its mama. They can't leave the hideout for a while because of the dragon.
Long story short the egg hatches and gets attached to them and eventually they can communicate with it telepathically. MC goes into town and gets followed back, so baby dragon makes some crispy critters.

Never actually read this, just heard about it from someone else

From the subject line, I was sure it was The Dragonriders of Pern or one of the other books in Anne McCaffery's series, since I believe that's how they started living on the dragon planet. I don't recognize your plot synopsis, though.
