What Gerald of Wales describes, via hearsay, is the ceremony called Feis Teamhair that dates to the pre-Iron Age era. It involves a white horse and the warrior-lord's sacral union with the horse symbolizing the land. Not very different from other ancient ceremonies. Nothing to feign surprise over. One can only wonder what the great horse carved in white chalk at Uffington signifies if not a similar symbolism and ritual there in prehistory.

Tara -- from the past to the future by Muiris O’Sullivan

This topic is part of my second novel, Stealing Tara, scheduled to launch later in this year.

Congrats on your upcoming release, J.S.

David, apologies, but I believe the only way you can stop receiving the messages is to unsubscribe from Goodreads messages altogether. There is no way for me to do it.

Another thought is to quit visiting the page, and over time Goodreads will stop sending you messages from here.

Very best,
Debbie

Durant family. Dr. Durant was a prominent railroad tycoon during the civil war years and beyond. His family then went on to pioneer the Adirondack wilderness. HIs son is famous for his rustic architecture in the region. My research has taken me to numerous libraries in the U.S. and England. http://www.wwdurantstory.com/

Jeffrey Perren | 27 comments Know of any good sources of medieval Swiss and Italian history?

I've read a dozen generic histories of the period and places. I'm looking specifically for those that say something useful (to me) about the period 1290-1350 around Lake Lucerne, then around Lombardy (Milan, et al).

It's pretty specific, I know, and I'm not particularly interested in more political history.

I'm looking for something that describes how people lived - housing styles, clothing styles, transportation methods, farming methods, some small amount of warfare information, and so forth.

That sort of thing helps flesh out the background in a novel. (I'm working on a re-telling of the William Tell legend.) I don't care about getting every tiny detail right - I'm not writing fictionalized history, but an historical fiction. Still, I like to avoid anachronisms or obvious errors.

To give one example, the history "Free and Swiss" by George Thürer has been immensely helpful, just 30 pages of which has provided political background history for the entire story. Now I need to flesh out some other aspects. Unfortunately, I don't read German, so the many potential histories written by native Swiss (or German) scholars is not an option.

If you know of something - which can even be a juvenile's book (you'd be surprised how helpful they are sometimes) - please comment. Again, though, not interested in Counts and Knights and battles and that sort of thing. Something more about how the 'average' person lived.
