Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) Yes I want to know how I do this as I have set up a Smashwords account (I am in UK) and added some of the books they have on to my wish list however the partner I have been linked with is in USA and I can’t buy from Amazon.com. Can I only buy her the titles on her wish list if any that appear on Smashwords also?

International gifting can be a pain. I'd look if your match has given you any preferences (some only want to get physical books because they have no e-reader). If your match is fine with getting ebooks and you can find some books from their wish list on Smashwords, you can buy from there (use 'Buy as a gift'). Your match can open an account to download the books (don't forget to change your name in your Smashwords profile if you want to stay secret). You can also buy physical books through amazon.com if your match has listed their real address. You can also ask your match anonymous questions through elfster if you need clarification.

Thanks Josy. I’ve just been on to amazon uk asking them why it’s not an option! Life would be much easier lol.

No, you can't buy through elfster. Elfster just shows you the details from your match and their wish list. If you are in the US, amazon.com allows you to gift ebooks. If you are outside the US, see my comment above. Does this help?

Yes, it would be! I'm still hoping that one day gifting will be allowed for all Amazon stores.

On the right side, under your giftee's name and address, it says 'More Info'. Sometimes you can find the email address there. If not, you can either order physical books through amazon.com (if your giftee is in the US) or you can ask your giftee anonymous questions through elfster to find out how best to send them gifts.

Please do! I'm sure you can explain all of this much better :)

Also, MAKE SURE YOU MARK GIFTS AS PURCHASED! Other people may look at wishlists and want to buy your match gifts as well (many people gift to people in addition to their match), and we want to avoid duplicate gifting.

Christelle | 472 comments Shin Mon wrote: "How do you change your Elf name? On your Elfster profile or you just use that name in the email you are going to send?"

When you are on Smashwords, go to your "profile" and then on "edit account". There, you change your real first name and last name to replace it with your chosen elf name. Don't forget to save your changes and then log out. Once you go back on smashwords, you can make a gift and the notification mail sent by Smashwords will display your Elf name.
Of course, don't forget to revert to your real name once the exchange is over :-)

Josy (aceofhearts83) | 668 comments Shin Mon wrote: "How do you change your Elf name? On your Elfster profile or you just use that name in the email you are going to send?"

It depends on where you are sending gifts from. Some people have opened email accounts just for this occasion which displays their Elf name. If you send gifts from Smashwords, you can change your name in your profile into your Elf name and it will be displayed to your giftee. I have never gifted through Amazon so I don't know how this works. When you gift an audiobook through Audible, you are able to write the name you want to be displayed to your giftee before you complete the purchase.

Like I said, I can't and never have gifted ebooks through Amazon. I've sent gift cards, though, and there I was able to enter the name I wanted to be displayed to the giftee.

edit: I hope anyone from the US can give a better, more satisfying answer :)

You need to change your name when you gift. It might default to you.

Can someone let me know if you can gift anonymously through Audible. I've been outed there in the past. I could ask my husband but I'm not sure if he knows that yet.

Did you have to register on Amazon Uk to do this? I am from uk and tried to go on amazon.com but it said I wasn’t eligible. I was wondering about trying to setup a US Amazon account as the book selection on Smashwords isnt the best.

You can try but I don't think you will be successful. I'm in Germany and have an US account but it says "Kindle titles are available for DE customers on Amazon.de." I think it's only possible for people of other countries to shop for ebooks at the US store if their own country doesn't have their own store. (I can buy everything else there but no digital content.) Amazon figures out where you actually are either through your IP address or your credit card information or whatever. But if you can figure it out, please share with the class ;)

Hello Hazel,
I've tried to open another account on Amazon.com (I have a French account). I was unable to go through it : first because my kindle is registered in France and then, because my bank account is also set up in France.
After checking a lot of other sites, the only site where I can internationally gift or receive gifts as ebooks is Smashwords, as either these sites don't do ebooks gifting, or, when they do, it's only between specific countries, France not being listed :-(
It's true that the Smashwords catalog is way less impressive as the Amazon one, but I manage to find something :-)

Sarah (is clearing her shelves) (sarahjf1984) I set up my Amazon US account before Australia had one of their own. When the Australian site opened up I just never switched over, so despite having an Australian address and credit card I use the US website with no hassles. I've even bought physical copies and had them mailed over here (the postage is exorbitant and only worth it if you're getting the book for practically nothing). In the past, when my site first started, I switched between the two sites in order to check out the Australian selection (crap in those days, not worth the trouble) and then switched back when I wanted something Amazon Australia didn't have. I did that a couple of times before realising that one day I might end up stuck with the Australian site when Amazon closed the loophole that allowed me to do it and stopped switching. Amazon US really is far superior in the books it offers and it allows me to buy for and receive from other US users.

Diane Dannenfeldt | 180 comments Here is the response from amazon.co.uk, just encase y’all are interested. Not sure about the migrating portion, seems complicated :D

Hello,

I am sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced.

Please be informed currently Kindle content cannot be given or receive as a gift on Amazon.co.uk at this time. While gifting Kindle content is not yet offered in the Amazon.co.uk Kindle store, we are working to make it available in the near future.

As an alternative, you may want to consider purchasing an Amazon.co.uk Gift Card. Amazon.co.uk Gift Cards are site specific and are only redeemable at the site of origin.

Your recipient will be able to apply the Amazon.co.uk Gift Card balance to their Amazon.co.uk account and make purchases from the Kindle Store using the gift card funds. You can find more information about purchasing and using Amazon.co.uk Gift Cards on our Help pages at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custo...

Further, I can understand that you wish to know if you purchase the book thru Amazon.com with her email address associated with her amazon.co.uk, will she be able to access the book on her kindle.

I can confirm that if you migrate her account to Amazon.com and purchase content under account and migrate again to Amazon.co.uk she will be able to access Kindle content.

Debra ~~ seriously slacking on her reviews ~~ (debrae) | 245 comments So I used Book Depository for the first time ever. My international giftee had no e-books so I was sending a physical book and the Paypal checkout was so quick it didn't give me any options to add gift messages or anything. I'm either going to be outed with all my real info or my giftee will see it listed as sending it to themselves! LOL Guess I'll have to send an Elfster message when it ships.

Above the comment box there is a link 'add book/author'. When you click on it, a search window opens where you can search for the book. At the bottom of this window you choose 'cover' and then you click 'add'.

Hehehe, I got the same answer last year from Amazon France.
Regarding gift cards, you can't used them to buy kindle books if the gift card has not been purchased on the site of your giftee. Last year, one of my friend from the US sent me a gift card and I finally asked her to redeem the card and to get the ebooks I selected and she sent them to me.
And I wanted to send a gift card to Josy who is from Germany, so I bought the card on the German site so she could use the card without any issue : I'm the one who suffered having to navigate on the German site because I don't speak German, LOL. Not sure I can do that all the time, though :-)
Tricky, tricky, tricky ;-)
