He is, for my money, the most variously talented of the last century, to ply either pencil, pen, or brush: profusely polyglot--extraordinarily carnal--he did write, on top of all this, Oxford's first accepted thesis on Joyce; was an impressive scholar of the Wake, of Pound, Olson, and Zukofsky.
