SamSpayedPI | 2306 comments The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey is a classic. It's part of a series but probably could be read as a stand-alone.

The Reading Raccoon (readingraccoon) | 143 comments Have you tried any of Sue Grafton’s books? Her main character is a private detective and she’s hired to solve a lot of different cases. Some of them are pretty “cold”. I’m thinking of Q Is For Quarry in particular.

Rachel | 1527 comments I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer is a good non fiction read. Sadly the author passed away while working on the book but it's worth googling more recent developments in the case after you read it.

There are two cold cases involving missing girls in Case Histories (fiction).

El | 502 comments Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed by Patricia Cornwell - at least it's her theory on the case.

Real Murders (not totally sure this is one, but it came to mind.)

Grave Sight this is a series. The MC is able to "feel" bodies in the ground as a result of a lightning strike that she survived. I'm not totally sure how many of the 4 books in the series have your theme, but I know that the last one has them solving the central mystery of the MC and her adopted brother/manager/husband/protector.

The Julius House this one has the MC solving the disappearance (and murder) of an entire family that happened years earlier.
