SOLVED. Sci Fi - Alien Invasion - Aliens look like Otters. [s]

The book was about an alien invasion by aliens that resembled Sea Otters. The settled mostly along the coastlines of all continents. Book was set in North America/USA

Plot followed two characters - one human and one alien

One scene described a room that was designed to mimic the alien's home planet with large pool of water.

I read it probably after 2005 but before 2015?

Could it be Course of Empire by Eric Flint and K D Wentworth?

I am sure the aliens in this, the Jao, had a resemblance to otters, and they were very fond of swimming, indeed I think it was necessary to maintain their fur. The story follows one of them and also a young American woman in particular, plus various others from both races.
There are two sequels, and I have just finished the third book in the series, I enjoyed them all.
