Wyatt Trunk (wbtrunk) | 8 comments I like to wait at least until I finish the last book(s) i bought, but I have made exceptions.

message 2: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) I had a very long TBR of old dust bunnies so I wasn't allowed to buy books. Have been reading them last year and this year and it looked like I'd finish them this year so I started to buy some new books....and.....kind of went overboard. I have bought like about 40 new books this year.... Oops...

message 3: by William (new)

William Macias (willdoggdotcom) | 19 comments I buy quicker than I read! I probably buy a few books a month and my TBR pile keeps growing!

message 4: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 421 comments I used to buy a lot more than I do now. I usually only buy when it’s something that I’m going to be waiting for months at the library because of holds or if it’s something I really loved reading and want to have my own copy. Utilizing the library more has saved me tons of money.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) If you mean new books like just published books I rarely buy those. Only if it's by an author I like or part of a series do I buy newly published books, with the occasional exception.

But "new to me" used books I buy all the time. I trade in my old books and try to buy on the bargain shelves. My TBR pile has grown to the point that it is going to take over my whole house someday.

Tell me about it lol

message 7: by Heather (new)

Heather Dufield | 94 comments I get rid of two and bring home five. I usually give book that I read to the Little Libraries that are in the park near where I live. Sometimes I find an interesting one there. Sometimes Dollar Tree will have book that for a dollar will be an interesting story.

message 8: by oshizu (last edited Oct 11, 2018 09:19PM) (new)

oshizu | 5762 comments I'm pretty good about staying away from bookstores.
But I'm soooo glad that Goodreads removed that Browse/Deals feature!
When I see a book deal on something I want to read at Amazon, it's so easy to tell myself, "Oh, it's only $1.99 or $2.99 or however it costs."
But it really adds up!
Haha, this is like a Bookaholics Anonymous meeting.

message 9: by Ketty (new)

Ketty (kettlekinsreads) More often then I should. But I buy most of my books used so when i do I can save a few dollars.

message 10: by SarahKat, Buddy Reads (new)

SarahKat | 6294 comments I try not to buy physical books. The only time I will is if it is for sure on my list to read in the next few months and I see it at a used bookstore AND it's not available at the library. I just don't have the space for a ton of a books, and don't like spending money on a book I may not love.

I purchase ebooks, again if it is not available at my library and I can't find a cheaper used copy.

Comic books are a different story. I have to own every graphic novel I read. Not sure where that comes from; continuing my husband's collection I guess. I buy 5 or 6 every other month or so. And they make up my Amazon wishlist so people buy them for me for Christmas and my birthday.

message 11: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1007 comments I don't really buy any "new" (just published) books unless I have a gift card or something. And even then I'll only buy a paperback because I'm not a fan of hardbacks. I've only bought a few hardbacks in my life and it was mostly due to a good clearance sale or something. I like to try to find used books at the library sales or goodwill or something. At one of the libraries last week I found an autographed copy of The Circle for a $1. That has been my most exciting find yet. It was a paperback too.

I'll get some ebooks here and there if Kindle has them for $2.99 or less. It just depends on how long the waiting list is at the library, or how cheap the book is, or maybe how much I think I'm going to like it.

I get more than half of the books I read at the library. I tend to read more of the library books than the ones I buy which is kind of a problem. I need to read what I have. I think all of the books left on my list this year I have a physical copy of so at least those will get read.

message 12: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Ohhh For some women is shoes, for e is books. Every year I promise myself not to buy new books because I have more than enough for the rest of the year but after a couple of days or hours... Oh bookdepository... Oh a kindle deal... I just can´t help it. I am happy..."Let's buy books"... I am sad: "Let's buy books". The oly good thing is that I do donate books. I always try to find them another home

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (misssummerrain) | 1384 comments I brought three books on Wednesday but it is normally once every three to six month but I love going to my local library.

message 14: by Bridgette (new)

Bridgette | 4 comments I go through phases of buying books, I will literally splurge out on buying books but then I wont buy any for a while. I guess it also depends what I am reading at the time and if I have reached a reading slump in which I am currently in at the moment. :( Sad times.

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1 comments Whenever I make it to a thrift store....

message 16: by Allison (last edited Oct 28, 2018 07:23AM) (new)

Allison | 498 comments Not often. I only buy books when I get a gift card for birthdays or Christmas. Those I save until there’s something I really want to own myself or books none of the libraries around me have. I just can’t justify an expensive purchase like new books on something I’m only going to read once.

I’m a big library user! Fortunately I’ve only ever lived within a mile or two from a library so it’s easy.

I do buy Kindle books when they are $1.99 and below but again it’s when none of the libraries around me has that book. So maybe 10 Kindle books in a year? Not many.

message 17: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments Every month. I work at a book store and get to see too many "temptations" per day to be as disciplined and wise as many of you. ;-) And I know that books "vanish", sometimes within a few years of being published.
Also, I'm a compulsive and greedy book hoarder.

But I'm considering getting a library pass again to get it under controll.

message 18: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) I do have a library pass and get my books from the library as often as is possible but our libraries are very ‘poor’, especially where English books are concerned, so......

message 19: by Wyatt (new)

Wyatt Trunk (wbtrunk) | 8 comments Tsundoku.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to buy books when I first lived on my own, but than started having a family and only got books from the library. Now that kids are older and finances are better. I have bought several. However I get them from this one bookstore that offers good deals so my two trips were pretty affordable. We could fill a bag for $20. So I only paid about 50 cents a book.

This Kooky Wildflower Loves a Little Tea and Books (alittleteaandbooks) | 1 comments Every month as part of a writing box (Scribbler) and Book of the Month. Otherwise, whenever I receive gift cards, money, and/or the mood strikes.

message 22: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Hartz | 2 comments I don't buy new books anymore unless I find discounted kindle books on Amazon. I go to library sales, garage sales, thrift stores and also use the library to download kindle books.

message 23: by Edie (new)

Edie | 22 comments I buy books (usually paperback) for my book club which is held at the great, independent bookstore in Nashville. Otherwise, I make use of the Nashville Library - which was won award as Top Library in the country last year.

message 24: by Jakob (new)

Jakob (4841) I'm aiming to be more purposeful when buying books now than I have been in the past. Meaning, only buying books that I have every intention of reading in the very near future.

But that being said, I do buy books fairly regularly. I have a hard time going into the bookstore on my university campus without walking out of there with a new book in my bag. Luckily I have less frequent visits there now that I've only got a thesis left to write.

I also buy a lot of coffee table books, or books relating to graphic design and such. Also, I have a couple of boxes of illustrated children's books, because I started collecting them for a while. I don't have kids...

message 25: by Tea (new)

Tea (prettylives) | 44 comments Physical books not that often, kindle books I now only buy if I really want the books and they're reduced. I have an audible subscription and I will often buy the kindle book if the audible is reduced to less than what my credits cost.

message 26: by Andreda (new)

Andreda (andredababy) | 24 comments I tend to borrow a lot of ebooks from the library. So, I really only buy new books when the library doesn't have a book that I really want to read

message 27: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 114 comments I'm going to try to keep book buying to a minimum in 2018. I only want to buy continuation of series (if I can't get them at the library). Anything else can wait until I've read more of my owned books!

message 28: by Cassie (new)

Cassie | 370 comments I get a book through Book of the Month.... once a month. :)

Other than that, I try to use the library as often as possible. If there is a new book I REALLY want, or it's a book I want on my shelf to keep, then I will spend the money. I also try to go buy used first, we have a couple of good stores nearby for that :)

message 29: by Samantha (new)

Samantha J | 22 comments I usually just go to the library for most of my books. If there's one I really want to read or keep then I purchase it. I probably don't even buy 5 books a year though.

message 30: by Dorottya (new)

Dorottya (dorottya_b) | 21 comments It fluctuates. Depends on what sales are going on locally, what I am in the mood to read for etc. However, I am having a nobuy year this year, as 1) I bought a ton of books in the past 2 years, 2) I have 100+ books on my physical TBR. So my challenge for this year is the TBR takedown :).

message 31: by Mehmet Ali (new)

Mehmet Ali Ertürk (merturk) | 18 comments Depending on my mood I buy 2-3 books mostly 1 of them paperback others Kindle Books

message 32: by Linda (new)

Linda | 62 comments Almost never!
I'm listening to audiobooks on Storytel. But if I really like a book, I can buy it later, just to have it in my bookshelf.

message 33: by Dee_Lyn (new)

Dee_Lyn (dee_l) I only buy books when I'm traveling. I love the buy a book and return it for 50% back deals in airports. The rest of the time I borrow library books or listen to audiobooks. I have a hard time listening to audio books when I fly because I have a tendency to fall asleep as soon as boarding is complete.

message 35: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaniewatkins) | 4 comments I try to buy monthly if not I definitely buy books every two months!

message 36: by Fiona (new)

Fiona | 187 comments I made the mistake of signing up for the daily free and cheap reads from several places. Browsing through those I often find bargains I know Id lie so I buy way too many! I mean a real fettish almost! I have so many to read, but it means I get to choose something nice every time I feel like a new book in my favourite types! Probably 20 a month!

message 37: by Paula (new)

Paula As far as making a purchase of a new book, meaning recently published, seldom. I tend to borrow those from the library. I don't have the budget for brand new books. Thrift stores, my favorite independent bookstore, free store, and the library are the places I get my books. Occasionally, I'll download one to my e-reader.

message 38: by Chris (new)

Chris simpson | 4 comments There is no better way to spend a couple of hours than a visit to Waterstones and browse the shelves, sit in one of there comfortable armchairs with a stack of books and read first chapters, synopsis or reviews and then buy a couple. I always keep the receipts and now and again return books to the store if they don't start right or I can't get into them. I would like to say that I use the local library more but just the feel of new books and turning crisp new pages is great.
i probably have 10 or 12 new unread books at the moment and will try and read most of these before my next visit to the bookshop.
I always think its a good thing to donate read books to a charity shop and as the are fairly new publications the tend to be well received. Last year I bought the first 8 C.J.Box Joe Pickett series all brand new and all 50p each. great bargain! I am enjoying Joe Pickett although they don't tend to stock these in British bookshops and so the next few will have to be Amazon buys.

message 39: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (fourmoonreviews) I don't buy brand new books, I go to my local thrift store and get them for 3 or 6 for $1, depending on what sale is on. I donate books after I read them so I always buy cheap.

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Velez (jennvreads) | 57 comments Now that I work in 2 libraries, I very very rarely buy new books (newly published AND new to me). So far this year I've bought 1, but that's because I absolutely loved a book after I took it out from the library, and knew that I would read it a bunch more times. This year I'm trying to keep it under 5, because last year I only bought 7 while trying to keep it under 10

message 41: by Chris (new)

Chris simpson | 4 comments Libraries where a part of my youth when I had a local {South London] library. In the early 60s there was no choice because I don't remember a bookshop and anyway I had no money, I am now in the fortunate position of having enough income to buy books and with that comes the freedom of choice. Books are quite expensive but I do feel that Authors also need an income so as long as a book is well written and captivating I am happy to buy whilst I can

message 42: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Lim | 10 comments I used to go to public libraries often when i was a child/teenager to borrow books, but as I grew older I think I gained a few hoarding tendencies, and the books that I do buy since then I never really let go of.

I tend to buy a few books (maybe 2 to 3) a month? I have a pretty extensive list of books TBR so i'm trying to cut down on the buying and finish up everything I have accumulated before it gets out of hand and spirals out of control!

I get them from loads of places like book sales, garage sales, online etc. I have problems reading e-books online or on a kindle, (it really strains my eyes and causes me headaches at times) and I think there's something really comforting about holding a physical book in your hands, flipping through the pages and smelling paper and ink that can't really be replicated otherwise.

I always see books as an investment - like you're buying knowledge in a way and i'd hopefully like to have the chance to pass down my collection to my children in the future so that they'd have something to enjoy and to remember me by once i'm gone.

Nicole Lim | 10 comments Minimol wrote: "Nicole wrote: "I used to go to public libraries often when i was a child/teenager to borrow books, but as I grew older I think I gained a few hoarding tendencies, and the books that I do buy since ..."

Alright! Yay, so i'm not the only one with such strange hoarding tendencies! (:

I've given it some thought before, and perhaps it's because I knew that all the books that I was reading were never really mine - I'd have to return them all to the library after reading them all, so eventually when I was lucky enough (like I am now) to afford buying books, I really don't want to give them up at all!

message 45: by Chris (new)

Chris simpson | 4 comments I have always kept my books up until I moved house and I would have needed a separate removal van just for them. I always think that I would reread a good book and there are a few that I have read a few times but there are so many new books to be read that I am thinking that there are an awful lot that will never be revisited. I pass good reads around family and friends and I also leave finished books on trains or other public places as I like the idea of found books. There have been various schemes and groups that encourage this approach and its either that or the charity shops that I donate books too. I was in a second hand bookshop today and despite having 20 plus books to read on my shelves it's still hard to pass a likely title or favorite author.

message 46: by Ice (new)

Ice M. (iceandspines) | 73 comments I hoard books a lot. :( Even when I don't plan on buying, I always come out of bookstores with a newly purchased book in hand. My book hoarding habit got so worse (wallet-wise) that I had to force myself to avoid entering bookstores at all costs. Now the only time I ever allow myself to buy books is when it's on sale or during bookfairs.

If you red using a kindle or similar you can get so many free books you can fulfil the hoarding instinct! I do!

message 48: by Mayke ☕️ (new)

Mayke ☕️ (rainynightsandfairylights) | 5 comments I don't have a specific book buying routine or anything. Almost every book I buy is from a thrift shop, so it depends if I find a nice book there. Most of the books that I read are from the library, so my tbr of books that I own doesn't go down fast.

message 49: by Brielle (last edited May 03, 2019 06:22AM) (new)

Brielle D.M. (brielledm) I buy several books (even when I'm not finished reading one). I have all 4 books of the Zodiac series, The Divergent series (including Four), and the first Caraval book (All which I have read this year). I'm also currently reading 2 series (Red Queen and Selection) and I bought both of the first books in each series. Although technically The Divergent series and Red Queen were used so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm also planning on buying some more books as well. Last year I read the first book in the Legacy trilogy and so this year I'm going to continue the series and buy the second book, Allegiance. I'm also planning on buying the third book in the Caraval series, Finale (I got the second book, Legendary from the library). And of course I'm probably going to get the rest of the books in the Red Queen and Selection series!

Sooooo.... yeah😊.
