Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I buy new books almost daily. I have over 1000 kindle books and since I am a senior citizen I doubt I’ll even read half of them. And I still have over 400 hardcover which I haven’t gotten to yet. Unfortunately, all of these books and all that I want to read is seriously stressing me out. Does this happen to any of you?

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I used to haunt the library in our town but moved to a different town and find the new one isn't very good. I also used to visit used bookstore all of the time but sadly, they re all gone in this and neighboring areas,

But even using the library, I also bought a large amount of my books. And with the Kindle its just too darn easy. Long ago I set my priorities to buy books and little else. And even today as a senior citizen, I continue to buy what I want when I want.

Funny story - sometime ago I was complaining to my husband that I have nothing to wear to an event. His answer was wear one of your books. I though that was really clever.

😄

Some of the dust jackets are pretty enough to wear!

Sunny | 2311 comments Several years ago, I decided I would only keep books I know I am going to read over and over again. And I only collect or keep my favorite books or authors. And I don't have to have everything by an author. Just my favorite books by them in most cases. Space is the main issue.

I probably buy 5-6 new things each year that I'm keeping. Otherwise, I check-out things from the library, which is easy enough since I work here. And when I find bargains on-line or at used bookstores, I purchase and donate them to the library. I sometimes have to purchase a copy of a book for a challenge, but I find good used copies and then when I finish with them, I donate them to the library.

Goo (hocc) I was a crazy book shopper years ago and would go on buying sprees of 15-20 books on one go, two times per month. I have since restricted myself from buying “book” books as I have tons still unfinished on my bookshelves, and am setting the goal of finishing them before I can buy anymore. But of course the occasionnal digital book on the Kindle is unpreventable...🙈

The Book Girl (thebookishgirl) | 187 comments I end up going to bookstores regularly. I am pretty good at saving money and budgeting. Books are my small splurge, I very rarely spend more than like 50 bucks a month on books.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Sunn is it ok to address you this way?

When people ask me how do you choose a book I must admit sometimes it’s the cover which calls to me. Actually I found one if my favorite books because the cover was so beautiful. The book was The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher. I originally borrowed this book from the library but now own this book in hardcover, paperback and recently for my kindle just in case ....

message 58: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen | 152 comments More often than I should. I am using the library ebooks option more. Altogether on iPad, I have over 500 books. Many are reference books for work but the rest are all novels/memoirs, etc. I would say i have read 75% of them.

Sunn is fine 😎

I have several copies of one of my favorite books Eight Million Ways to Die One because I love the book and 2nd because I enjoy the covers. I prefer having Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books in paperback with the 60's & 70s covers.

message 61: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Sunny - I used to read Ed McBain under the name Evan Hunter Really enjoyed those books. Also read a few Ed McBain titles.

His Evan Hunter books ARE good. I've read several of them too.

Rebecca Vassar | 12 comments I only bought a series of unfortunate events as it's my favorite book series, and rarely will buy a new book of it's too long to read in the 21 days rental my library allows for. Also sometimes if I have to wait something like over 4 months for a book I want to read.

Tomethee Chalamet (likeactualsoulmates) | 269 comments I usually don't buy a lot of books, I'd say on average I purchase 3-5 books every 3 months (which I believe is healthy). Also, there's no library in my area so I have to turn to either online libraries, or buy a copy of every book I want to read.
What I do have a problem with is reading slumps, so at the moment I am looking at 20 books physical TBR

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am absolutely awful when it comes to controlling my desire to buy books, in my case e books. Now because of being housebound, I really went to town. Since Feb. 22nd I have downloaded 50 books which is a record for me. I’m not much of a clothes shopper but when I see a bookstore or the Amazon website, my eyes light up.

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 135 comments I just bought about nine from book depository before that just one and walk in at Barnes and noble for crescent city by Sarah j Maas. I do a lot of rereads.

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 135 comments And before that I bought capturing the devil by kerri manslco because I didn’t know it was out . To finish off the stalk f Jack the Ripper series !

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 135 comments most is my TBR will take over my closet and front book case. I try to keep it in control by going through every so often and giving away to those less fortunate that I know or may not know. ( Many different channels) Problem is my bookcase really the shelves won't fit hardback books or even soft back. A shelf was built in my closet but I can't reach it without a ladder.

message 69: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 135 comments I am trying to stock pile reasonably I didn't realize book despostry was in the UK will it effect my book order ? I don't think so ... But they're sending my books one by one. ( probably safer) Oh alot of authors are offering free books to get through hard times. ( kindle nooks etc computer ) problem is I don't own a kindle or nook I like physical copies.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments In theory, I buy books whenever I feel like it. Since I exclusively read e-books, I don't really worry about space limitations. I do try to read the ones I own before purchasing more, just for the sake of my own mental clarity.
In 2018, I did carry out a "no-buy" simply because I was budgetting more towards my son and less towards reading, so I instead utilized my library a lot.
Nowadays though, I'm back to buying whenever I want, whilst still being mindful of how much I spend.

message 71: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments I forgot to mention: it also depends on how much the book costs. For example, I'm interested in reading The Water Dancer but I would NEVER, willingly fork over the $30 for it (or for any book for that matter), no matter how good it supposedly is. In a situation like that, I'll either decide to wait however long it takes for pricing to go down, or borrow it from overdrive if it's available. In lots of cases, I'll forget about the book entirely in the mean time, or lose interest or find something better.

You own every single series of unfortunate event book ? So you were one of the few who knew the actually ending? That Netflix so kindly made and it was said that people couldn’t read each and every book because it was too sad ?

message 73: by Rob (new)

Rob Brown | 78 comments I buy too many books. I visit a bookshop about once a fortnight and buy three or four, but in school holidays I can buy a dozen extras easily. I cannot read at the rate I purchase.

message 74: by Danny (last edited Mar 22, 2020 02:22AM) (new)

Danny I'd rather have extra books than extra anything.

message 75: by Anne Grete (new)

Anne Grete Holje I usually borrow most books at the library. I buy the books I really love, and really want to own. And when there are sale and good books Are cheap I sometimes can't hjelp my self and buy several books. The books I buy can stay in my bookshelf for a long time before I read it. I am a mood-reader, I pick books by the mood I am in at that time.

That must be tough. Twice a year only. You must have to plan your reading so carefully? Or do you have other means to choose books libraries ereaders etc?

message 77: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Uhm...at least every time I get paid? :) I have no self-control when it comes to owning books. Someone asked me once what I thought my sons would do with them all when I die. My reply, "I don't care. I'll be dead." :) Though I have left instructions and told my closest friends who are also readers that they are to have first dibs. :)
