Midwife Ada Navarre longs for a world where she doesn’t have to hide behind a mask. Peasants cover their faces to conceal a deformities called the Scourge but Ada wears a mask for a different reason. She’s normal, and in a world of deformities, beauty is a dangerous thing.
Midwifery is one of the few ways for a girl to make a living. Ada excels at it, even though her actions defy the king and her own conscience. She has almost earned enough money to bribe her way to a better life when King Donican discovers the secret beneath her mask.
Ada discovers she is part of a dark history that left humanity on the brink of extinction. The key to the Scourge may be Ada herself but she will have to unlock the secrets of a lost civilization to find a cure.
