Diane | 1234 comments Hi Guys I am back for the last Challenge of the year. Thank you Melanie for taking over the last one. Melanie and I have decided to take turns on the challenges so hopefully we will come up with some fun and exciting challenges for the new year :).

We always end the year with my favorite challenge, the shelf-clearing, catch-up and get some closure challenge.
At long last, we get to FINISH WHAT WE STARTED!

Description

This much needed (for me), end-of-the year challenge runs from October 1 through December 31, 2018.

Read books from the following " finally get around to" categories to participate:

♦ One (or more) of any books in a series that you've started but not continued in over 6 months (Prior to 4/1/2018). It can be an ongoing or a completed book series.
♦ One or more of the books that have been on your TBR (To Be Read) Goodreads bookshelf for 6 months or more (Prior to 4/1/2018)
♦ One or more of any book that you've had in your possession for 6 months or more. Physical or ebook, owned or borrowed! (Waiting to be read since 4/1/2018 or earlier). Obviously we'll have to use the honor system for this one. :)
♦ Any book that you previously started, but never finished for some reason (Prior to 4/1/2018) - Feel free to peruse your "put down" folders ;)

The Goal is to read 6 books. Feel free to Mix and Match!

Nitty-Gritty Details:
-No Books with a pub date falling after 4/1/2018.
-Books must be more than 150 pages to qualify
-Audio books are allowed
-No more than 3 books from the same series
-No more than 3 newer releases from 2018 will be allowed (must be published prior to 4/1/2018)
-1 non-YA book is allowed (Non-YA = middle grade, New Adult, or Adult).

I'll be keeping track of participants progress (as much as possible) in post #2. Participants will be listed alphabetically by their name and the number on the post made to declare their participation.

When posting your progress, please remember to use the number of that original post as well.

Let’s see how much we can catch up on, readers and feel free to do more than one round if you feel the need to clear those shelves!
TO THE BOOKSTACKS!!

Barb I'm in! Although I've gone off YA lately.

I've just started back at a book I started in July, but I've owned it for years. I was just trying to find anything to read! I like this challenge, it's been known to get me cleaning stuff out and lead me onto to new series to start the next year.

Finished --
Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

Meh. I wasn't that into it.

Jennifer | 456 comments Finished book #1 And I Darken (The Conqueror's Saga #1) by Kiersten White - received this as a gift for Christmas. Took me long enough to get to it :)
I enjoyed this book. I put it at a 4. I feel a little bad because I kind of hate Lada, but I LOVE her younger brother. I am excited to continue the series, and bonus for waiting so long: both of the next two books are available now :)

I just checked out your list. You have some great ones on there. I LOVE, love, love Trickster's Choice! That duet was my first introduction to Tamora Pierce, and Wow!, that lady does not disappoint!

Fiorela (filemot) | 30 comments Count me in!! I have some great books that I have been putting off for a while now.
Some oldies:
The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones Doll Bones by Holly Black The Gold-Son by Carrie Anne Noble
The Girl With All the Gifts (The Girl With All the Gifts #1) by M.R. Carey The Bees by Laline Paull The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt Hold Me Closer, Necromancer (Necromancer, #1) by Lish McBride In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters Time After Time by Wendy Godding

These would do, for now, I have a bunch more but I will read them later. I hope to finish these ones before December. Fingers crossed!!

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

I thought it was super good except for the romance aspect, which I really didn't like. Everything else though - REALLY good.

Diane | 1234 comments I have you all updated. I have to say that getting back into reading has been good for me also. I finished my first 2.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Wow very good. I gave it 5 stars and hope the movie does it justice.
The Winner's Kiss (The Winner's Trilogy, #3) by Marie Rutkoski only 3 stars. It was an ok ending to the series but didn't grab me as much as the others. Maybe it is because it has been so long since I read the first two.

Oh that Winners trilogy finale disappointed me too.
And yes, The Hate U Give was great. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie!

Melanie | 1911 comments book #1
Skulduggery Pleasant (Skulduggery Pleasant, #1) by Derek Landy

This was a light, magical, mystery caper. I enjoyed the humor, and now I can check it off my TBR list. I will very likely read the rest of the series.

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) Woohoo I'm on the board!

Book 1 is done

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress, #1) by Julie C. Dao (TBR)

Overall, not super impressed but I'll tune into the next one because I'm a sucker for Asian settings and fairy tale retellings.

message 25: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments book #2
The Screaming Staircase (Lockwood & Co., #1) by Jonathan Stroud

This was my horror read for the month. It's not too scary, but it's not light either. The world-building concept was interesting. It definitely justifies the need for young protagonists, which some YA lacks. I definitely liked it and plan to continue the series.

I've had the first two Jonathan Stroud books for a while, and now you make me want to pick them up and read them! :)

I guess that's why this challenge is so great, lol. It gets you to read a few more of those books just sitting on your shelves.

message 29: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (last edited Oct 29, 2018 02:31AM) (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments book 3
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (Rats of NIMH, #1) by Robert C. O'Brien

More MG than YA, this is the story of a mother who is willing to brave any challenge to save her kid. Told from the perspective of a mouse, it has a unique POV. The book goes into the history of the NIHM experiments more than the movie...because the book is better than the movie. It is a nice, warm book-end to my month’s reading.

Ps: I’ve owned this book for like 4 years!

message 30: by Barb (new)

Barb Finished the first one a little while ago, but wasn't able to get on to updated. I started reading this in July, but I've owned it for a few years. I finally got around to starting the series, and I've owned the whole trilogy forever, so if I can finish it, they'll all count. I did also finish the second one recently.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

I really liked it, but the beginning doesn't fit so much with the rest in my opinion and it took me a LONG time to get into it (hence starting it in July and putting it down until now.)

This was one of my favorite books as a child. I read it the first time in 4th grade. Thank you for the reminder about this, as I have a 4th grader who might like it now.

Melanie | 1911 comments Book 4
Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

This is my MA pick. It was billed as similar to the Hitchhikker's Guide (and it was), but even though it WAS funny, something about it didn't quite hit the mark. I stopped reading it for like a whole month because it didn't captivate me enough. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers, #2) by Brenda Drake Assassin of Truths (Library Jumpers, #3) by Brenda Drake

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) Book 2 is done! Akata Witch (Akata Witch, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor (physical shelf)

4 stars

I've been holding off on this one for quite some time for some reason. Maybe because it was called the African Harry Potter and I was understandably skeptical because how can you top Harry Potter? (view spoiler)

African Harry Potter is such an understatement.

This book is the African Akata Witch. The world building is phenomenal, Sunny (the MC) is very relatable as a twelve-year-old thrown into a new world where she's expected to keep up or die trying, and her friends are fully formed people. While the plot is a little thin, the world of Leopard People and Lambs more than makes up for it.

message 37: by Kdbrand (last edited Nov 05, 2018 07:24AM) (new)

Kdbrand | 353 comments I've finished books 1 & 2--both are books I've owned for a couple of years.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield --Non YA--Alex Award winner with a gothic, literary feel. I really enjoyed the beginning and end of this book, but it did get a little slow in the middle. 4 stars

Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell --Demented teenage girl and interesting backstory about creepy dolls. I'm glad I finally read it, even though it wasn't very scary. 3 stars

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) Book 3 complete! Post 4 is updated.

Briar's Book (Circle of Magic, #4) by Tamora Pierce (series)

3.5 stars

This is actually a re-read (shhh), but part of a series reread that I started last December. I wanted to finally read the last three books in Emerlan saga—and since I haven't read any of them since um, the early, early 00s, I needed to start from the beginning. Briar's book is the fourth in the Circle of Magic quartet.

The audiobook was pretty good, and kept me a lot more interested than if I had read the book, although I'm still not as bowled over by the Circle books as I am by anything Tortall related.

Finished my 4th
A Thousand Nights (A Thousand Nights, #1) by E.K. Johnston

I liked it, but the pacing was pretty slow. And not gonna lie - my eyes would start glazing over every time I saw the words "my father's father's father. . . " But all the lore and stuff was important to the story, and the writing was really nice.

Also, it reminded me to finally read the second book to The Wrath and the Dawn. I read the first book YEARS ago and never moved on to the next one.

Rebel Belle (Rebel Belle, #1) by Rachel Hawkins (TBR, not Goodreads)

3 stars. It was entertaining and light fun (with a little more gritty gore than I was expecting), but the overuse of tugging/running hands through hair, the word "superpowers," and the overabundance of people trilling their dialogue made it a little annoying at times.
