R | 3 comments I read this I think between the years 2009-2011. Checked out from a library in hardback but it didn't seem too beat up. It was shelved in the scifi/fantasy section. The book was in English. I don't remember the author's gender or what the cover looked like.

I remember the author's note saying that it was inspired by Pride and Prejudice, which was surprising because it didn't seem to have much in common with P&P.

It's set in something similar to the Georgian or Regency era (possibly in a version of London), but it's a different universe where every day is a different length. The characters all carry almanacs which they reference to know how much daylight they'll have on a day-to-day basis (making sure they had enough candles seemed to be a big deal).

One of the plots follows a male character who ran away to join the theatre, except the actors are all people who can manipulate light and use their power to put on stunning performances. But using the power costs them energy, and I think I recall that those who use it constantly may age prematurely.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

The character who ran off to join the actors thinks he's a hotshot light bender person but actually one of the actors has been subtly amplifying the character's creations using his own energy because he has a crush on the guy and wants him to succeed.

R | 3 comments That is a strong possibility. My library has it - I'm grabbing it today to skim through and confirm. I will report back. Thank you!

R | 3 comments Yes, that's definitely it! Some of the plot points I remembered happened in book 2 (I forgot it was part of a series as well). Thank you so much!! I'll move this topic into solved.
