I have done a couple from Hannah's books but haven't attempted any in Goldy's series. The recipes in the Goldy books seem more cuisine than I am willing to try in the kitchen. Hannah's seem more comfort food type recipes.

Of course I have done quite a few of Joanna's recipes. I like pretty much all the recipes that I have baked except for maybe one but everybody else in my family and at work liked them. So it doesn't mean that I won't bake it anymore.

message 3: by Janece (new)

Janece (janecesuarez) Hi!

I am new, so I thought I'd jump right in here. =)

I have tried recipes from the series about Hannah Swenson by Joanne Fluke. We tried some of the cookies and a mini cheesecake recipe that I served at a party that people went nuts over! I have also used recipes from Laura Childs' teashop mystery series for our family dinners and we really enjoyed those as well.

A little about me: I am 42, with a lot of health issues, and a homemaker. We homeschool our 8 and 12 year old children. Both my husband and I enjoy cooking (although NOT cleaning up after, lol) although I did take basic culinary classes for 2 years. I taught cooking 101 for kids for a year for our homeschool co-op.

message 4: by Sheri (new)

Sheri (sherirad) I am probably newer than you and I don't try the recipes as they have too many steps. I have taken copies of the Chocolate recipes in Dying for Chocolate by Davidson but haven't tried it yet. Too many things going on with semi-retirement and still teaching reading and math to low income children.
I am older than 42 and my kids are grown and have graduated from college more than once. One is a CPA and one is a law student after two degrees that didn't work out. No marriages or
grandkids as yet.
Will look into the wonderful series you suggested about tea shoppes, supper clubs, and coffee houses. Live in the mountain west and look for books to read during the winter months.

Ana (momtomandj) | 4 comments I tried the Cappuccino Royales cookies from Joanna Fluke (Key Lime Murder?) and they were amazing. I've done them 3-4 times.

message 6: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Hi all! I'm new to the group. I have made most of Goldy Shultz's cookie recipes, mainly the ones that call for chocolate and they were all very tasty! My favorite recipe of hers are the bar cookies with raspberry jam, chocolate chips etc, (forget the name) that are in her newest novel, sweet revenge. I store them in the fridge...they are amazing.
I've also baked up many of Hanna Swenson's cookies and have loved them all, my favorite's are the german chocolate cake cookies. Mmmmmm good! I've wanted to try her chocolate chip crunch cookies with the corn flakes but haven't gotten to them yet. :)
See ya around the group!
Valerie

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine (ebnerlake) Hi guys! I'm new too! I have also tried several of the cookies from Hannah's recipe box, and they've all turned out really well. My mom just made the Chocolate Peanut Butter cake from the newest book (Carrot Cake Murder) and that one didn't go so well. The recipe for the cake doesn't call for any chocoloate! So it's really just a peanut butter cake, and we were confused. But that's the first one we've had any trouble with.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I've tried some of the Hannah Swenson recipes and I really liked most of them.

If I didn't like them my husband did.

I also tried a couple of Tamer Myers Pennsylvania-Dutch recipes years ago, and they were pretty good - except for the brown sugar pie, which I wasn't sure I'd like, but I wanted to make because it was so unusual.

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 3 comments One of my coworkers brought in red velvet cookies from one of the Hannah Swensen books and they were amazing! I'm not sure of the exact book, just that it's from that series.

Billie | 4 comments Hi, I'm new here, too. I started reading DMD's books long ago and tried a couple of her recipes. I've made the Cereal Killer Cookies several times and the Happy Ending Plum Cake was pretty good. I know I've made many others, just can't think of them right now. I'll have to try the recipes from other series as suggested here.

message 14: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (whatkreads) I've tried a few from Susan Wittig Albert's Herb Shop series. She has a bunch of them listed on her website. Our fav is the Mint Nut Bread.

message 15: by haley (new)

haley (basketballlover) | 3 comments I tried the Joanna Fluke recipes (Black & White Cookies come to mind but I don't know the other ones), but they all turned out way to doughy after cooking a few minutes longer than the time. I've tried a brownie recipe in 'Dying For Chocolate', a Goldy Bear recipe and they were delicious.

message 16: by Marianne (new)

Marianne | 2 comments I tried the Mango/Peach Bread from one of her books and it was delicious.

message 17: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1 comments I make the Molassas Crackles from the Joanna Fluke recipes all the time, they go FAST no matter where I bring them and people always ask for more (and the recipe!) saying they are better then 'grandmas'.

message 18: by Marianne (new)

Marianne | 2 comments I made the White Chocolate Pumpkin Dreams Cookies from Joanna Flukes book Plum Pudding Murder Book, which is her latest book out. Everyone loved the cookies even the ones who don't like pumpkin.

Marianne, How did you like "Plum Pudding Murder"?
Ive read a few of JOanna Flukes books, but I havent read this one yet.

Karen | 3 comments The cream puffs were amazing. The pudding filled ones were devoured by my 6 year old and my youngest one ate the whipped cream fillings. I even made apple filling that went over well at Christmas.

The carrot cake recipe turned out moist and yummy!

Can't wait to make Apple Turnovers!

message 26: by Cristy (new)

Cristy E I'm new to the group and new to culinary mysteries as a whole. I've read quite a few of the Goldy novels and tried one or of her recipes. I'd rather bake than really cook, so I was really tickled to discover the Hannah series by Joanne Fluke. I've decided to try as many of her recipes as I can and share my insights. I've started a blog: http://mysteryrecipes.blogspot.com/ to record my experiences. You're welcome to stop by and leave your comments.

message 30: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliawebb) Just now joining your interesting group! The only recipe I've actually tried is the Black Forest Brownies from Carrot Cake Murder: Joanne Fluke. Must admit I left out the cherries, and it was still to die for! Once when I made it I only had Baker's Sweet Chocolate and Ghiradelli Bitter sweet chips and they were a great combo. This is my family's favorite brownie recipe!

message 31: by Billie (new)

Billie | 4 comments Julia, mmmm, that sounds delicious! Have to read that book soon!

Diane ~Firefly~ | 7 comments My favorite is the Chocolate Chip Crunch cookies from Chocolate Chip Murder by Joanne Fluke. You use crushed up Corn Flakes in the batter and I won't make regular chocolate chip cookies anymore.

That's cool Diane! I was trying to come up with the next recipe I should try and I think you've inspired me to try this recipe. I'll try it this weekend and post my results on my blog. I hope mine turn out as well as yours have! Any tips you'd like to share about this recipe?

I'm sure you'll love them. I think I might end up cooking them a little longer than the recipe says, but it's been a while. I recommend the 1 tsp scoop for portioning. Have fun!

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I haven't but I like to look at the ingredients.

Christy Brannen (murdermostbritish) | 1 comments I just read the first Joanne Fluke book a few days ago. The recipes were mouthwatering! Will definitely have to try the pecan chews. Pecans and brown sugar, what could be bette? (maybe a little chocolate coating?)

message 40: by Wendy (last edited Mar 11, 2011 12:53PM) (new)

Wendy (kethry) | 2 comments Hi all! Glad I found this group, I feel the urge to try a lot of recipes from the mysteries I've been reading and I was hoping to find a group that wanted to discuss them! I made Red Velvet cookies today from Carrot Cake murder and I was really surprised at the way they turned out. I made the recipe as listed in the book and ran into the following: 1) the recipe says it makes about 3 dozen cookies, I found it made 5 dozen (12 cookies per sheet, as indicated) 2) These cookies did not spread AT ALL. The recipe says to cook them until they rise and become firm, but since they were balls of dough (recipe didn't say to flatten at all) there was no rising to be seen. The cookies aren't bad, not as flavorful as I thought they'd be, but honestly I don't think they'd have much going for them if not for the cream cheese frosting. I may try them again and flatten them; maybe that will allow them to rise. Has anyone else tried these?

message 41: by Kate (new)

Kate (kate28) | 7 comments Haven't tried those but Paula Deen did a red velvet whoopie pie cookie the other day on her show- they looked delicious- maybe that recipe is better? I finished Carrot Cake Murder a few weeks ago and remember reading the recipe you tried and thinking YUM!

message 42: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (kethry) | 2 comments I had tried the Highlander bar cookies before, and those were very good (although they got better a couple of days after they were baked; the first day they just tasted like brownies) I'm excited that she's putting out a cookbook this fall with all the recipes, plus some extras.

I like the recipes in the Goldie books, but I agree that they seem too involved for me right now. With two kids, ages 3 and 7, and two jobs, fast is almost as important as good. lol Now to decide what to make tomorrow... :)

message 43: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I agree the Goldie recipes are too much. I just like to look at recipes, and store it in the backburner of my mind.

Jen | 2 comments Big fan of Hannah's funeral dish, and at Christmas made the mystery cookies. BIG HIT. Who would have thought tomato soup would make a good cookie.

Do you remember which book the mystery cookies are in? You have peaked my interest in trying them.

I did try Sally's Banana Bread from one of the Hannah books, around Christmas and it was very similar to my grandmother's banana cake recipe and very yummy.

message 46: by Jill (new)

Jill (mizmitten) | 1 comments The Mystery Cookies are in the "Lemon Meringue Pie Mystery". I've made these several times to rave reviews and they freeze well.

message 48: by Buddy (new)

Buddy (buddylicious) | 1 comments I love listening to the audiobooks in the Hannah Swenson series, but have only managed to try one recipe for the pineapple upside down cookie bars and although I didn't care for them much (they weren't very sweet) my roommate and her grandmother loved them. I'm excited about the new cookbook. Might have to preorder that one so I can try some of the other recipes without having to listen to them and type them up.

message 49: by Kate (last edited Sep 09, 2011 09:01PM) (new)

Kate (kate28) | 7 comments I recently finished "The Pumpkin Muffin Murders" by Livia Washburn. The book takes place during Thanksgiving, and SOOOOO many of the recipes in the back of the book sounded delicious! I will be trying some of these out this holiday season! One in particular was for a stuffing "ring" with cranberry sauce. yummmmm!

message 50: by Angela (new)

Angela Holland (bookaunt) I have made the bread in the first scrapbooking mystery by Laura Childs - so far that is all I have tried. It was good though
